    • The stack cooler comprises a substantially vertical circular chamber with walls from refractory blocks or bricks. The chamber comprises an upper prechamber and disposed below it the quenching chamber proper, where the prechamber is provided with an upper conical section with a central charging opening. Gas exhaust discharge openings are provided in the transition region between prechamber and quenching chamber over the complete circumference at a distance from each other, which are joining to an annular collection channel running in the masonry. The masonry comprises an outer layer and an inner layer separate from the outer layer over the conical section and also over the cylindrical section disposed below the conical section. The inner layer adjoins at its lower end the masonry work of the wall in the area of the quenching chamber via support walls running between the gas exhaust discharge openings. Advantageously, the inner layer is formed thinner than the outer layer and a narrow slot is left open between these two layers. Preferably, this slot is furnished as a step slot corresponding to the thickness of the bricks or, respectively, of the layers of the masonry work.

    • There is disclosed a heating system for regeneratively heating a coke oven battery having twin-heating flues extending side-by-side transversely of the length of the coke oven battery. Halves of the twin-heating flues are separated by a flue midfeather that forms a gas flow space at the top thereof. Between twin-heating flues, there is a heating wall midfeather extending up to the oven crown. Regenerators below the oven sole extend transversely to the coke oven battery with each regenerator coupled by three passageways to the heating flues. Two regenerators are associated with each twin-heating flue. A first passageway extends to the bottom part of one-half of one twin-heating flue, a second passageway extends to the bottom part of one-half of an adjacent twin-heating flue with these two flue halves separated by a heating wall midfeather. A third passageway extends upwardly in the heating wall midfeather where branched passageways extend into the two heating flue halves of adjacent twin-heating flues at an elevation above the oven sole.

    • Continuous dry quenching of coke is carried out with an inert gas circulated through hot coke in a vertical chamber and through a heat exchanger. The vertical chamber comprises a top prechamber below a charging opening and a quenching chamber which is below the prechamber. The quenching chamber has a bottom gas entry and a bottom coke discharge. A gas exit between the prechamber and the quenching chamber supplies gas to the heat exchanger. A gas entry and/or a gas exit communicating with the top of the prechamber is used to control the flow of gas so that the temperature of the gas removed from the vertical chamber remains constant during quenching operations when there is a disturbance to the flow of coke.

    • An inner cylindrical shell assembly includes a metal cylinder with the wall thereof divided along at least one but typically a plurality of longitudinal parting lines. A stress compensator tube extends along each parting line and is welded to the edge surfaces of the metal cylinder. An inner stratum of solid corundum bricks overlies an outer stratum of corundum bricks which has internal spherical hollows. These strata of bricks are retained under stress within the inner cylindrical shell assembly. This assembly is received within an outer cylindrical metal shell and annular members are disposed within an annular space between the shells with a felt mat disposed between the annular members and the inner cylindrical shell.

    • Burner tubes for coke oven heating flues and method and apparatus for inserting and/or removing the same from burner nozzles. The burner tubes themselves can be inserted or removed from burner nozzles permanently installed in the sole of a heating flue and comprise thin-walled alumina elements provided with external fins adapted to engage the top edges of the burner nozzles. The apparatus for inserting and removing the tubes comprises two pivotally-connected rods, the lower of which is adapted to carry either a fixture which can insert a burner tube into a burner nozzle or a fixture which can remove a burner tube. In either case, the fixture is such that it can be engaged with, or disengaged from, a burner tube by manipulation of the uppermost pivotally-connected rod without manual contact with the tube in the heating flue itself.

    • Double heating flues are arranged transversely to the horizontal axes of coke oven chambers within heating walls therefor. Side walls between each double heating flue have an internal passageway in the lower part communicating by exit orifices at vertically-spaced locations with the heating flues at the opposite sides of the side wall. The lower parts of the side walls converge horizontally into side wall portions some of which abut against the vertical heating wall and others extend through the vertical heating wall in an alternating arrangement of superimposed bricks. The upper parts of the side walls extend into load-bearing contact with the roof for the coke oven chambers. In the heating walls, three identical stretcher bricks in each course interlock by tongue-and-groove abutment joints. The middle brick abuts in a symmetrical relation with a flue side wall. Pairs of regenerators extend horizontally below each coke oven chamber with one regenerator of each pair alternately preheating air for combustion and receiving burnt gases while the second regenerator of each pair alternately receives burnt gases of combustion and preheats lean gas or preheats air for combustion when heating with rich gas. A dividing wall between each pair of regenerators includes rich gas feed ducts extending vertically to rich gas burners arranged in the heating flues. A rich gas burner is arranged closely adjacent the transverse wall between a pair of heating flues.
