    • A generally cylindrical drum of heat stress and corrosion resistant construction, and having an opening therein, is rotatably mounted on a frame movable on rails along the coke side of the coke oven battery. A movable cover is fixed to the shell and covers the opening in the shell through which hot coke passes, when pushed from a coke oven chamber. A hood is fixed to the structure supporting a coke guide and has a movable portion that coacts with the rotatable shell when coke gravitates into the shell. The drum is rotatable to several positions. Means are included to quench the hot coke and to extract the particulate laden steam which is generated by the quenching operation. Additional means are included to remove noxious gases and particulate matter which emanates from the hot coke.

    • Substantially horizontal rotary drum system for quenching and cooling coke, the drum having an internal helical conveying vane for moving the coke through the drum upon rotation of the drum, the diameter and the length of the drum and the pitch of the helical vane being such as to convey predetermined amounts of coke through the drum in the time periods required to quench and cool the coke with the drum rotating at speeds which will not cause undue attrition of the coke. Water sprays are arranged at the coke entry end of the drum, screens to drain excess water from the drum are present near the coke delivery end of the drum and a steam exhaust hood closes the coke delivery end of the drum. A conveyor conveys coke away from the coke delivery end of the drum, the hood including enclosure means for the conveyor. The helical vane is tapered through part of a convolution at the coke entry end of the drum to accept the coke without crushing and at the exit end of the drum to smooth out the rate of delivery of the coke to the conveyor. Hopper and spout means deliver the hot coke to the coke entry end of the drum, the point of delivery being adjacent the lowest portion of the drum to prevent the coke from feeding into the drum too rapidly and clogging the drum. The spout slants in the direction of drum rotation to give better control of the rate of feed of the coke into the drum.

    • A method is described for quenching coke coming from the distillation of coal and having a temperature higher than or equal to 900° C., comprising the steps of a) lowering the temperature of said coke to about 700-300° C. by heat exchange with a fluid through walls of a thermally conductive material interposed between coke and fluid, b) feeding a continuous flow of said coke at about 700-300° C. into a turbo- cooler (T), comprising a cylindrical tubular body (18), closed at opposite ends by respective end plates (19,20), provided with an optional cooling jacket (21) for the inner wall thereof, at least one inlet opening (9) for the coke, at least one inlet opening (10, 15, 16) for water, at least one discharge opening (11, 12) and a rotor, rotatably supported in the cylindrical tubular body (5) and comprising a shaft (13) provided with elements (14) projecting radially from said shaft, adapted for the handling and advancement of the coke; c) feeding a continuous flow of water at a temperature less than or equal to 100° C. into the turbo-cooler (T), through said at least one inlet opening (10, 15, 16) and subjecting said flow of coke and water to the action of the rotor, which advances the coke towards said at least one discharge opening (11); d) continuously discharging from said at least one discharge opening (11, 12) a flow of coke at a temperature lower than or equal to 200° C., and a flow of water vapor.

    • A method and apparatus for cooling and, preferably also, simultaneously de-dusting a hot particulate material, such as calcined petroleum coke, containing a substantial percentage of fines are described. The cooling and de-dusting operations are highly efficient and are carried out by modification of conventional rotary cooler apparatuses presently being used by industry for cooling various particulate materials such as calcined petroleum coke. The conventional cooler is preferably modified by installing therein at least one tumbling section or zone wherein the interior of the cooler is subdivided into a plurality of longitudinal compartments, which impart to the particulate material a high degree of tumbling free-fall action. In a less preferred embodiment, no such tumbling section is used or added to the cooler. In any case, central, non-rotating conduit means are included in the modification(s) made to the cooler to provide for the placement of one or more thermocouples within the cooler and also the conduction of fluids (such as water) to the interior of the cooler. In the preferred embodiment having at least one tumbling section, the cooler is also preferably provided with auxiliary equipment which supplies a de-dusting agent within same, said equipment or means, in conjunction with the tumbling section or zone of longitudinal compartments being capable of finely, and very efficiently, dispersing the de-dusting agent, such as an oil, upon the particulate material while the material is being cooled and subjected to tumbling free-fall action in the cooler.

    • The specification discloses a mobile coke quenching apparatus accommodated to the control of air pollution. The apparatus comprises two adjacent oppositely rotating hoppers between which a wedge-shaped bridge is tangentially disposed in centered alignment to an entrance doorway. The end of the bridge furthest from the doorway has a nose inclined upward and flared plowlike symmetrically to both sides. The entire coke oven charge being pushed is deposited on the bridge, moved toward the nose, and then forced away from the wedge-shaped bridge into the hoppers on either side by the plowlike action of the nose thereon. Conjoint action of the nose and rotation of the hoppers causes pile-up of the coke charge in a circular ridge at the top surface of the coke in the hoppers sufficiently to contain the entire coke oven charge being pushed. The coke oven charge is gravitationally deposited on the central area of rotary tables beneath the hoppers upon which it is quenched and across which it is impelled radially and removed at the peripheries thereof.
