    • An automotive power plant includes three turbine rotors, of which one forms a spool together with the compressor, and the other two rotors are interconnected by a gearing. The first turbine rotor is undersized, and cannot provide the necessary power for driving the compressor at full load, although the spool does not have to drive any internal auxiliaries. A slim shaft, carried in air bearings and rotating at supercritical speed, also when the plant is idling, transfers power from the gearing to the compressor spool.The turbine casing is die-cast of a light metal alloy, and is internally clad with pre-formed ceramic insulation components, bonded to the metal walls. In a front drive vehicle the casing is mounted in arcuate guides having their centers at the vehicle wheel axles, whereby the casing may be swung about 90.degree., when the gas turbine is to be serviced.

    • In order to obtain a compact and serviceable gas turbine plant including a compressor and a turbine rotating about a common axis and further having at least one combustion chamber and an air preheater, the turbine and the compressor are spaced apart axially to provide a space for mounting the combustion chamber or for the gas discharge, respectively. The air-preheater is divided into at least two box-shaped units, each unit including at least two individually mountable exchanger elements. The power take-off with the pertaining reduction gear is located at the compressor end of the plant, leaving the turbine and heat exchanger easily accessible for servicing.

    • An automotive gas turbine which includes at least one power turbine rotor and at least one further turbine rotor driving at least one compressor, as well as a variable transmission for transferring energy from either of the rotors. The compressor rotor is made of lightweight material and the variable transmission is arranged in such a manner that the power transferring train from the transmission to the compressor rotor will obtain considerably less than moment of inertia than the power transfer train from the pertaining turbine rotor to the transmission. Last-mentioned portions of the power transfer train will thus form a rotatable body, the inertia of which is connectable to the compressor rotor, for instance, during starting or acceleration. If a further turbine rotor is directly connected to the compressor rotor, this further turbine rotor is made of ceramic material, which has a low specific weight, and will not noticeably increase the moment of inertia of the compressor unit; a main point in the arrangement is that the inertia-providing body is rotatable independently of the power output shaft, so it may be kept in readiness even when a vehicle is stopped.

    • A vehicle transmission includes a planetary gearing having two sets of planets, one of which being of the stepped type with different diameters at opposite ends of the planets. Input is by way of the stepped planets and output is transferred by way of the other planets. A planet carrier for the stepped planets carries a sun wheel cooperating with the other planets, and is formed into a clutch housing having first and second compartments. The planet carrier for the other planets is provided with a clutch member, and a brake member, the former of which is adapted for cooperation with the second compartment of the clutch housing, while the other is adapted to engage the stationary casing enclosing the gearing. A ring gear cooperating with the stepped planets carries a clutch member adapted for engagement with the first compartment of the clutch housing. A sun wheel on a lay-shaft engages one of the stepped planets and supports a brake member adapted to engage a stationary portion of the gear casing. The clutch and brake members are selectively engageable for providing three gear steps while driving forward as well as in reverse.

    • In a gas turbine power plant including at least three turbine rotors operating upon independent shafts, one rotor is designed to drive the compressor, one is designed to produce the main part of the power output and the third rotor is adapted to aid the two first mentioned rotors, variable transmission means being provided to interconnect the rotor shafts.In order to improve part load efficiency this third rotor is provided with vanes being substantially slim and straight when compared with the conventional reaction type blades of a power turbine, whereby this third rotor may act as a power producing turbine during high loads, and as a power consuming fan during part and low loads.
