摘要： An optical recording and reproducing disc for recording and/or reproducing information by the application of laser beams having a wavelength .lambda. in the range of 0.7 to 1.0 .mu.m, the disc being constituted by a disc-shaped base having at least one spiral guide track thereon with top surfaces parallel to the surface of the base at a height above the base different from the top surfaces of the portions of the base between the spires of the track, which height is in the range of .lambda./12 to .lambda./6, the guide track having a width approximately equal to the effective diameter of the laser beams; and a uniform thickness coating of a light recording material on the top surface of the guide track and the portions of the base between the spires of the guide track, the light recording material being a material the transmittance and/or the reflectance of which is varied by irradiation by the laser beams.

摘要： The optical density and/or the reflectivity of a recording layer included in an optical disk is selectively changed to record information by irradiation with a semiconductor laser beam, while the recording layer may be covered with a suitable protective film. The thickness of the recording layer is so determined that it is able to record information by means of a continuous wave type semiconductor laser beam, while the optical absorption rate of the recording layer is adjusted by setting the percentages of particular additives. The recorded information may be reproduced by the application of a laser beam, the incident power of which is lower than that of the recording beam, to detect the reflected light.

摘要： A plurality of optical heads each of which comprises an independent light source and optical system are provided on the same side with respect to a recording medium having a plurality of recording layers. Alternatively, with respect to at least one light source in an optical head having a single objective lens and a plurality of light sources, an optical path correction system is provided on an optical path unique to the light source, and while light emitted from one light source is focused on a specific recording layer by shifting of the objective lens, light irradiated from another light source is focused on another recording layer by the optical path correction system. Thus, information can be reproduced from or recorded in a plurality of recording layers simultaneously and an error in focusing of light onto the plurality of recording layers can be suppressed.

A first information layer formed by a thin film for reflecting a portion of a light beam made incident on the first substrate and permitting penetration of a portion of the light beam is formed on a surface of the first substrate. Guide grooves for tracking or information pits corresponding to information signals are formed on a surface of a second substrate. A second information layer having a reflectance higher than that of the first information layer is formed on a surface of the second substrate. Between the first information layer and the second information layer, there is formed a transparent separation layer for positioning the first information layer and the second information layer to be spaced a predetermined distance apart from each other.

摘要： An optical information recording and reproducing apparatus for recording and reproducing an information signal on/from both concave portions and convex portions of guide grooves formed on a recording medium is disclosed. The optical information recording and reproducing apparatus includes: an optical portion for focusing a light beam emitted from a light source on the recording medium; a focusing control portion for controlling a focal point of the light beam; a tracking control portion for controlling the position of the light beam; a selection portion for selecting which of the concave portions and the convex portions of the guide grooves are used for recording or reproducing; a polarity inverting portion for inverting the polarity of an output signal from the tracking control portion depending on a result selected by the selection portion; a waveform setting portion for setting a modulation pattern for the light; and a signal reproduction portion for demodulating the information signal from a light reflected or transmitted by recorded marks recorded on the recording medium; wherein at least one of the focusing control portion, the tracking control portion, the waveform setting portion and the signal reproduction portion has at least two kinds of operation conditions for recording and reproducing the information signal on/from the concave portions and the convex portions of the guide grooves, and wherein the operation conditions are selected depending on the result selected by the selection portion.
