    • An EEGR valve has a solenoid with an armature supported at each end on circular disks. These disks are fixed to the top and bottom having numerous penetrations (e.g., slots, slits or openings) to permit the disks to be deflected upward or downward. The penetrations are arranged such that when a current is applied to the solenoid coil the armature deflects the disks and permits the armature to move up and down within the coil. The penetrations are arranged as concentric rings of penetrations. The disks are fixed at several locations around their edges to the stator of the solenoid. In this manner, the armature moves back and forth along its axis and not laterally, thus permitting the stator to be located quite close to the armature without wearing against the stator, A spring is provided to preload the armature and deflect the disks in a concave shape different from their unloaded and substantially flat configuration. In this manner, the coil can drive the solenoid.

    • A system and a method for recirculating a flow of exhaust gases. The system comprises a passage through which the exhaust gas flow passes, a valve movable in the passage between a generally open configuration and a generally closed configuration, an actuator operatively connected to the valve, and a fail-safe returning the valve to one of the generally open and generally closed configurations if the actuator is disabled. The generally open configuration of the valve substantially permits the exhaust gas flow to pass through the passage, and the generally closed configuration of the valve substantially prevents the exhaust gas flow from passing through the passage. The actuator includes a one-way driver and a release to move the valve between the generally open and generally closed configurations and to vary the exhaust gas flow though the passage. The method comprises energizing the actuator with a power supply, and moving the valve to a fail-safe position if the power supply fails.

    • A rotary proportioning valve has a valve body with two inlet ports and an outlet port spaced apart about an axis. The valve body has a circular side wall and a first circular end wall closing one axial end of the side wall. Each of the ports intercepts at least the first end wall to communicate with interior space of the valve body. A shutter disposed within the interior space is supported for rotary positioning about the axis, and is operated by a shaft that extends through a second end wall that closes the opposite end of the body side wall. The shutter has a circular wall that confronts at least the first end wall. Plural fenestrations in the circular shutter wall are positioned relative to respective body ports in accordance with positioning of the shutter for proportioning flows into the inlet ports into a proportioned flow from the outlet port. A spring-loaded mechanism within the interior space of the valve body bears against the second end wall to maintain the circular shutter wall confronting the first end wall. In one embodiment, the shutter has an axial wall on the perimeter of the circular wall, the fenestrations extend into that axial wall, and the ports also extend into the side wall of the body.

    • The valve has a solenoid actuator and a position sensor providing an electric signal of the position of the solenoid armature. The solenoid is an electromagnet coil disposed on a plastic bobbin. The magnetic circuit contains a stator member having a flange disposed against a flange of the bobbin, and the position sensor has a plastic housing having a base that captures the stator member flange against the bobbin flange. The stator member flange contains apertures through which non-metallic material that joins with the bobbin flange passes to join with the position sensor housing base, thereby uniting the bobbin and the position sensor housing in assembly capturing the stator member flange. The assembly may be fabricated by an insert molding method or a method in which joining material is melted.

    • A method of forming a composite extrusion is disclosed wherein a main body portion (1) of the extrusion is first extruded from a thermosetting material, this body portion then being heated so as at least partly to cure it, the main body portion then being passed at high temperature through a further extruder where a thermoplastics material (8) is extruded onto one or more surfaces of the main body portion (1), the subsequent composite extrusion then being cooled and formed into its final shape. It is important that the combining step be undertaken at a temperature high enough to cause the thermoplastics material to bond to the thermosetting material and while it is simplest for the thermoplastics material to be on an outer surface of the composite extrusion, it is possible for it to be located within the thermosetting material by extruding the thermosetting material in an “opened out” state and then after extruding the thermoplastics and while the extrusion is still hot, folding in edge regions of the main body to overlie the thermoplastics material and bond thereto. The thermoplastics material may be of a special color, may be embossed, and if it is located within the thermosetting material in the end product, may be stiffer than the latter. The invention also extends to the extrusions themselves.
