    • An apparatus for moving a valve flap, especially in the air intake duct of an internal combustion engine, including a vacuum box (20) which executes a longitudinal movement in dependence on the application of a negative pressure or vacuum, and the longitudinal movement of the vacuum box is transmitted via a coupling rod (16) to a traverse rod (15), which in turn is connected to an actuating lever (13) for the valve flap (11). The coupling rod (16) and traverse rod (15) system allows the vacuum box to be arranged in any position relative to the valve flap (11). The apparatus can be simplified further by combining the diaphragm disk (27) with the coupling rod (16) to form a single, integral part. In this case, a force is exerted eccentrically on the vacuum box. The eccentrically exerted force can be compensated by the diaphragm having a shape other than a round contour.

    • An air/fuel control apparatus mounted on a racing automobile engine delivers fuel to the engine. A valve therein controls the flow of fuel to the engine, irrespective of the position of the accelerator foot pedal, and the valve is connected to a throttle linkage linking the pedal to the valve. The valve includes a double acting pneumatic cylinder means with a slidable piston therein. A movable shaft extends through both ends of a cylindrical housing, and moves with the piston. One first end of the shaft is coupled to the valve so that slidable movement of the piston opens and closes the valve to increase and decrease, respectively, flow of fuel to the carburetor of the engine. A cable rod connects the housing to the pedal so that movement of the pedal causes the housing to move with respect to the piston therein. A solenoid valve delivers gas under pressure selectively to one side of the piston to either increase or decrease fuel flow to the engine while at also controlling the rate of gas exhaustion from the opposite side of the piston to control the rate of movement of the piston, thereby to control the acceleration or deceleration of the engine. A second end of the shaft extends out from the opposite end of the housing and has an adjustable limiting member to limit of movement of the shaft in one direction by the limiting member contacting the housing.

    • An apparatus for assisting a primary governor device (20) on an engine at certain load conditions or during transient loading is disclosed. The primary governor device has a control arm (12) which is moved by a primary governor spring (15) via a primary governor arm (14). The control arm (12) governs opening and closing of the throttle plate (10) on the carburetor (11). Four embodiments (47, 54, 30 and 78) of the governor assist mechanism are disclosed. The governor assist apparatus has an assist spring (48, 55, 32, 76) operatively connected to the control arm (12). A vacuum capsule (41) actuates the assist spring (48, 55, 32, 76) from the primary governor device (20) according to the vacuum in the intake manifold and load on the engine. The first embodiment or linear mechanism (47) has an assist spring (48), an intermediate link (49), and the diaphragm plunger (40) in linear alignment. The second embodiment or rocker mechanism (54) interconnects the assist spring (55) and the diaphragm plunger (40) by means of a pivotal arrangement or bell crank (58). The third embodiment or hinge mechanism (30) has an intermediate link (36) which abuts against a clip (49) on the control arm (12). The fourth embodiment or governor retarding mechanism (78) has the assist spring (76) positioned directly between the primary governor arm (14) and vacuum capsule (41).

    • A throttle holding device is disclosed that allows an operator to hold open the throttle of the vehicle when the vehicle is not being driven. This increases the amount of available heat to the heating system of the vehicle cab and will allow the vehicle cab to be more quickly and efficiently heated. The throttle hold device of the present invention acts in conjunction with the parking brake and is actuated upon engagement of the parking brake through a pneumatic circuit. Upon actuation a piston is moved against a spring bias and causes the throttle cord of the vehicle to further open the throttle thus raising the idle speed of the vehicle. A shut-off switch is included on the pneumatic circuit to disconnect the system should the operator not desire that the higher idle be obtained. The shut-off switch is particularly useful in the summer months or whenever it is more important to conserve gasoline than to adequately heat the vehicle cab.
