    • Disclosed is a scanning method and apparatus for scanning documents in a multifunctional machine. A scanning sensor module moves along the main scanning axis of the apparatus in either a first direction or a second direction opposite the first direction along the same scan line. The scanning sensor module moves to any line in a sub scanning direction and scans the line. Then, the scanning sensor module moves to a second position and re-scans the line. Since the scanning along the main scanning axis is performed at least twice, the total amount of data collected is increased, thus increasing the resolution of the image that is recorded along the main scanning axis.

    • A document paper size detection method and apparatus, in a facsimile device, having a plurality of sensor cells forming a charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor module which is repositioned according to a determination by a CPU as to whether the facsimile is to be operated in a book scanning mode or a sheet feeding mode. In the book scanning mode the CCD sensor module is move to a scan starting position and the scanning operation is performed. In the sheet feeding mode the CCD sensor module is moved to a location for detecting an optical sensor reflecting unit, and based upon an optical alignment of one of the plurality of sensor cells with the optical sensor reflecting unit, a size of the sheet of paper to be scanned in the sheet feeding mode is calculated. The CCD sensor module is then moved to a scanning location for scanning the sheet of paper and the sheet of paper is automatically fed past this scanning location.

    • A high addendum tooth for a spur gear that prevents interference upon engagement with other high addendum gear teeth when the engaging gears are not perfectly aligned. The gear tooth design is divided into two portions along the face width of the tooth. The first portion is located at the first end of the tooth and involves having a high tooth height. The sidewall or face surface of this first portion may be involute, flat, or some other profile. The second portion of the gear tooth is situated along the remainder of the length of the tooth extending from the first portion to the second end. The second portion does not have a high tooth height. Instead, the top of the second portion of the tooth is cut and ground to have a flat surface. The second portion is proportionally much longer and occupies a much greater portion of the face width than the first portion. This design allows the engaging gear teeth to slide over each other instead of gouging into each other, thus facilitating smoother operation between slightly misaligned spur gears.

    • A single motor driving device usable in a facsimile system which uses a single motor to drive operation in one of a transmission mode, a reception mode, a copying mode, and a reception back mode. The single motor driving device may be constructed with a drive gear rotating through a driving force of a step motor; a first gear engaging with one side of the drive gear; a center gear engaging with one side of the first gear; a first reciprocating gear engaging with the center gear, the center gear and first reciprocating gear being pivotally connected to each other by a first link; a second gear installed to one side of the first reciprocating gear; a cam gear for changing a position of a lever which is installed to an upper portion of thereof, which is installed to the other side of the first reciprocating gear, provided with a cam for controlling the first link, a lever cam for controlling the lever, and a sensor cam for controlling a sensor at one surface thereof; the sensor for setting a position of a transmission, copy, reception and reception back of the cam gear provided the other surface of the cam gear; and a second reciprocating gear engaging with the other side of the center gear, the center gear and the second reciprocating gear being pivotally connected to each other by the second link.
