    • In one embodiment of the invention, an inkjet printer selectively energizes ink ejection elements in a scanning printhead such that the top nozzles of the printhead do not always print the first line of text in a scan. In one embodiment, this is accomplished by occasionally aligning the bottommost nozzle in the printhead with the bottom of the last full line of text to be printed during the scan. The alignment of the printhead with respect to the lines of text to be printed is varied from page to page or varied at other intervals so that the top nozzles and bottom nozzles are used about equally. This will also cause more uniform wear of the middle nozzles. The more uniform wearing of the nozzles and ink ejection elements extends the life of the printhead. In inkjet printers using a black ink printhead which has a wider printing swath than one or more color ink printheads in the same scanning carriage, a new printing technique makes use of the nozzles in the wider printhead which extend beyond the shorter printhead when both printheads are being used during color printing.

    • A swath printer and multipass printing method for improving print quality. The printer minimizes dot placement errors on a printed medium due to depositing drops of ink from lower quality printhead nozzles by providing a printmask having a mask pattern which prints with those nozzles most susceptible to dot placement error using a hi-fipe printmode which deposits into a specific pixel location a small number of drops in each of multiple passes, and a multidrop printmode which deposits into a specific pixel location many drops rapidly in one of the passes. Because such a printer and method prints substantially equally with all printhead nozzles, it does not shorten the useful life of the printhead due to defects associated with the number of times a nozzle deposits ink.

    • Disclosed are an ink-jet printing method and apparatus for jetting ink successively from nozzles of an ink-jet head at a prescribed frequency and forming each of a number of pixels by a plurality of dots conforming to the tone of the pixel. Each nozzle of the ink-jet head has a heater A and a heater B. Printing is performed by changing the number of heaters actuated to jet an ink drop, thereby to control the formation of a large or small dot by each nozzle, and by changing the method of driving the heaters A and B in dependence upon the density of the ink used. In regard to the timings at which the large and small dots are formed by each nozzle, the small dot is formed first. As a result, the large and small dots can be made to overlap so that an image having excellent tone reproducibility can be printed.

    • The present invention is directed to a method for processing color image data to reduce intercolor bleeding in an image printed on a receiving medium. The method begins with the receipt of a target pixel that includes a plurality of separation pixels corresponding to individual color planes, the color planes including a black plane and at least one non-black plane. The steps of the method further include determining if the target pixel is within an black border region near a black/color interface, and if so, modifying the target pixel using a substitution operation according to a black pixel modification pattern, the black pixel modification pattern identifying separation pixels in the black plane to replace with separation pixels from a non-black plane; and determining if the target pixel is within a color border region near a black/color interface, and if so, modifying the target pixel using a thinning operation according to a color pixel modification pattern, the color pixel modification pattern identifying a pattern of separation pixels in a non-black plane to remove from the composite image.

    • This present invention is embodied in a printing system and method for inducing shrinkage-tensioning of a flexible nozzle member of a printhead portion of an inkjet printer with an adhesive and novel arrangement. The printing system of the present invention includes a nozzle member securely coupled to a printhead body with an adhesive arrangement that allows shrinkage-induce tensioning of the nozzle member. The adhesive arrangement includes having an adhesive located between a top portion of the printhead body and the flexible nozzle member. The top portion has a mechanical structure such that it induces tensioning of the flexible nozzle member during thermal expansion of the adhesive. Namely, the adhesive arrangement of the printing system of the present invention is capable of efficiently tensioning, and thus, flattening the flexible nozzle member during the adhesion process of the nozzle member. As a result, trajectory errors of ejected ink droplets from the nozzles are reduced.
