    • The present invention is a coating composition having good scratch resistance and a method for improving the scratch resistance of a coating composition. The coating composition comprises (A) a film forming binder system containing a crosslinkable resin and optionally a crosslinking agent for the crosslinkable resin; (B) substantially colorless carbide or inorganic microparticles, range in size from about 1 to 1000 nanometers prior to incorporation in the coating composition, and the microparticles are reactive with the crosslinkable portion of the film forming binder system; (C) a solvent system for the crosslinkable resin, optional crosslinking agent, and microparticles, wherein the crosslinkable resin is present in an amount from about 10 to about 80% by weight and the inorganic microparticles are present in an amount from 0.1 to 60.0% by weight based on the sum of the weights of the crosslinkable resin, the optional crosslinking agent, and the inorganic microparticles.

    • A coating composition comprises at least one material dispersed in a vinyl or acrylic polymer, wherein the vinyl or acrylic polymer comprises (a) one or more anchor group monomer units (a) having an ionizable or active hydrogen functionality or a functionality that forms a covalent bond with the dispersed material, wherein the ionizable functionality is other than a carboxylic acid group in which the carbonyl carbon is separated from the closest ethylenically unsaturated carbon by at least four atoms and the anchor group monomer units (a) are other than those having polyoxyalkylene groups; (b) about 5% to about 45% by weight of one or more stabilizer monomer units (b) having a carboxylic acid group in which the carbonyl carbon is separated from the closest ethylenically unsaturated carbon by at least four atoms, having polyoxyalkylene groups, having gamma-hydroxy carbamate or beta-hydroxy carbamate groups, and combinations thereof; and (c) up to about 50 percent by weight of aromatic monomer units.

    • A method for reducing the molecular weight of aminoplast compounds, the aminoplast compounds obtained thereby, and coating compositions containing said aminoplast compounds are provided. The reduced molecular weight aminoplasts are obtained by reacting (a) an aminoplast compound, having a total number (y) of reactive substituents on the amino nitrogens of the aminoplast, where y=(E.times.M) and E=equivalents per mole of aminoplast and M=total number of moles of aminoplast, wherein the reactive substituents are selected from the group consisting of --NH, alkylol, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, and mixtures thereof and(b) at least one carbamate compound selected from the group consisting of unsubstituted and substituted primary carbamate compounds, unsubstituted and substituted secondary carbamate compounds and mixtures thereof, in the presence of primary or secondary alcohols, at temperatures under 150.degree. C., and at pressures ranging between atmospheric pressure and 20 atm pressure, to form a functionalized aminoplast compound, wherein at least one and up to (y-1) of the amino substituents on the aminoplast are substituted with the carbamate functionality.
