    • A coating composition comprises at least one material dispersed in a vinyl or acrylic polymer, wherein the vinyl or acrylic polymer comprises (a) one or more anchor group monomer units (a) having an ionizable or active hydrogen functionality or a functionality that forms a covalent bond with the dispersed material, wherein the ionizable functionality is other than a carboxylic acid group in which the carbonyl carbon is separated from the closest ethylenically unsaturated carbon by at least four atoms and the anchor group monomer units (a) are other than those having polyoxyalkylene groups; (b) about 5% to about 45% by weight of one or more stabilizer monomer units (b) having a carboxylic acid group in which the carbonyl carbon is separated from the closest ethylenically unsaturated carbon by at least four atoms, having polyoxyalkylene groups, having gamma-hydroxy carbamate or beta-hydroxy carbamate groups, and combinations thereof; and (c) up to about 50 percent by weight of aromatic monomer units.

    • The present invention is directed to a water-based acrylic emulsion dispersant to be used as a grind resin to incorporate inorganic pigment into a pigment dispersion for a coating composition. The acrylic emulsion dispersant is the reaction product of butyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, styrene, methyl ether polyethylene glycol methacrylate, polyethylene glycol methacrylate, and polyphosphoric acid. The present invention is also directed to a method of preparing the acrylic emulsion dispersant. In this method, the butyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, and styrene are combined with water to establish a first reaction blend. Similarly, the methyl ether polyethylene glycol methacrylate and the polyethylene glycol methacrylate are combined with water to establish a second reaction blend. Next, the first and second reaction blends are polymerized to form an intermediate emulsion polymer containing a hydroxyl group from the functionality of the polyethylene glycol methacrylate. Finally, the hydroxyl group from the polyethylene glycol methacrylate is reacted with polyphosphoric acid to form the acrylic emulsion dispersant which is utilized for efficient wetting and grinding of the pigment.

The invention also provides a method of making a preferred embodiment of the reactive additive (C) and the reactive additive (C).

    • The invention provides a powder slurry composition comprising a first solid particulate component (a) dispersed in a crosslinking component (b) having at least one crosslinking resin which is liquid at 20.degree. C. First component (a) is in solid particulate form having an average particle size of from 3 to 30 microns. Component (a) has a compound (i) having a T.sub.g >40.degree. C. and at least one carbamate or urea functional group, or a group convertible to a carbamate or urea group appended thereto. Crosslinking component (b) has at least one crosslinking resin (i) which is liquid at 20.degree. C. Most preferably, crosslinking component (b) will further include a self-crosslinking aminoplast resin (ii) having at least two aminoplast groups and at least two groups which are nonreactive with solid particulate first component (a) but which are reactive with said aminoplast groups. The powder slurry composition of the invention has a VOC of less than 1.0 lbs./gal and provides performance and application improvements over the prior art.
