    • A composition comprises one or more compounds containing no 1,2-epoxide groups but capable of polymerizing using a cationic catalyst and at least one chelate compound in which the co-ordinating atom is bound by one or more of its valencies to both a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom and to an oxygen or sulphur atom. Polymers may be formed of the above compounds, which may also contain a compound containing one 1,2-epoxide group or up to 10% of a di- or poly-epoxide, using the above chelate compounds as catalysts and polymerizing the monomers in solution, e.g. in methylene or ethylene dichloride. The compounds exemplified are styrene, a-methyl styrene, indene, anethole, isoprene, norbornadiene, dicyclopentadiene, n- or isobutyl vinyl ether, hexachlorobicyclo - (2,2,1) - hept - 2 - enyl vinyl ether, N-vinyl carbazole, 3,3-bis-(chloromethyl)-1-oxacyclobutane, 1,4-epoxy-cyclohexane, epichlorohydrin, tetrahydrofuran, an oxetane alcohol, trioxan, benzyl chloride, di-isobutylene, cyclohexene, acenaphthylene, divinylbenzene, divinylether, myrcene, divinyl dioxan, dioxalan, diketen, furfural, b-pinene, acrolein dimer, linoleic acid and bicyclo-(2,2,1)-hept-5-en-2-ol and mixtures of crotonaldehyde and benzene, of 3,9 - divinyl - 2,4,8,10 - tetraoxaspiro (5,5)-undecane and glycerol, of di-(bicyclo-(2,2,1)-hept -5-en-2-yl) succinate and glycerol, and g-butyrolactone, tetrahydrofuran and epichlorohydrin. The chelate compound may be where A is the co-ordinating atom, e.g. B, Al, Zn, Fe, Sn, Zr, V, Ti or Sb, hal is F, Cl or Br, X is O or S, Y is O or S doubly bonded to Z, or N, Z is an organic group such that the number of consecutive atoms linking X and Y is 2-4, m is 1-3, n is 1-4, Z1 is H or an organic group and m1 is 1 or 2. The preferred chelate compounds are where A, hal, n and m are as before and P, Q and R are H, halogen or organic groups.
