    • Recovery of zinc from a gas containing zinc vapor is carried out by means of lead circulating in a circuit and separating out pure metallic zinc by cooling said lead. The gas containing zinc vapor is brought into intimate contact with atomized lead in liquid form which takes up the zinc. The lead is introduced at the top of a cooling tower (1) and the gas is conducted in counter-flow to the atomized lead droplets. Lead collected at the bottom of the tower (1) is transported (7) to a separating chamber (8) where it is cooled, so that the zinc is segregated from the lead and can be separated (10). The lead is then cooled further before being recirculated (15, 16) to the top of the cooling tower.

    • In an assembly of spaced heat exchange plates, each second interspace is sealed from the surrounding atmosphere by gasket means extending along the periphery of the adjacent plates forming such interspace, the other interspaces being sealed from the surrounding atmosphere by permanent joints between the adjacent plates forming said other interspaces. The plates have pressed corrugations in their heat exchanging surfaces and also have pressed grooves extending around said surfaces for receiving the gasket means. The permanent joints are formed along abutting bottoms of the pressed grooves of the respective adjacent plates. The seals formed by said joints and the seals formed by the gasket means are disposed in aligned relation across the plate heat exchanger.

    • A method and apparatus for treatment of the fly ash are described wherein heavy metals are separated and wherein there is formed a leaching resistant slag; the fly ash is introduced into a reactor into an oxidizing gas stream which is heated to at least 2500 degrees C. in a plasma generator; the fly ash melts and forms liquid drops of slag and a carbonaceous or hydrocarbonaceous material is added to the gas stream which burns and supplies extra energy to the process; the ratio of oxygen and carbon is regulated so that the ratio CO.sub.2 /CO+CO.sub.2 is kept within the limits 0.4-0.9; heavy metals in the fly ash such as zinc and lead are reduced and passed into the gas phase with the gas discharged from the reactor, cooled and washed and the metal oxides are separated; the slag is collected in the bottom of the reactor and can be continuously tapped via a slag lock; the slag's content of calcium oxide and silicon dioxide can be regulated by the admixture of a slag-forming material with a high content of silicon dioxide.
