    • A method and apparatus is disclosed for determining perpendicularity between a tool mounting assembly and a work surface of a machine tool, the apparatus being in the form of a device including a shaft adapted for mounting in the tool mounting assembly and having a generally perpendicular platform rotatable about a longitudinal axis of the shaft, a plurality of at least three proximity indicators being mounted on the platform in equidistant relation from the axis of rotation for the shaft, each of the indicators including a movable proximity detecting element arranged for engagement with the work surface, a gauge block preferably being disposable upon the work surface to provide a common reference surface for establishing an initial "zero" setting on each of the indicators.

    • A method and apparatus for positioning a boring machine relative to an engine block or the like has a base plate suitable for arrangement upon a deck surface of the block, the plate being formed with openings above each of the cylindrical bores as well as in alignment with threaded passages in the block. Preferably, bolts are threaded into the block to secure the base plate so that, during reboring, the bolts distort the block about the bores in a similar manner as during engine operation. Also preferably, adjustable means are arranged between the base plate and the deck surface of the engine block in order to position the base plate in precise alignment with the main bearing axis of the engine block so that the bores are formed perpendicularly to the main bearing axis.

    • A pipe severing device (1) and method utilizing a chain (13) having stress inducing wheels (19) efficiently and safely severs brittle materials including cast iron, vitreous clay, cement and asbestos pipe. The device includes an actuating handle (6) which pivots over a pipe support surface (3). Upon pivoting over the surface, holddown arms (7) attached to the actuating handle frictionally grasp a pipe. The handle may then pivot about a second point or remain rigid, in either case engaging a first limit switch (25) which actuates a hydraulic cylinder (35). The hydraulic cylinder tightens the chain causing the stress inducing wheels to create stress concentration points around the circumference of the pipe. Cracks propagate between stress concentration points, quickly severing the pipe. The pipe support surface includes resilient pads (5a,b) which further frictionally grasp the pipe.
