    • Improvements to self-replicating duplex forms are disclosed. Generally, a single sheet of paper is divided into original and copy panels by fold line, and carbonless coatings are applied to the panels so that information entered on the two, front and back surfaces of the original panel are reproduced on the two surfaces of the copy panel.(Group 1) An endorsable carbonless CB coating is applied to the original panel, either at the mill or on-press. A carbonless CF coating is applied to the copy panel so that the coated copy panel is substantially the same thickness as the coated original panel. Specific areas for filling out information on the original panel are offset, from front-to-back, and methods of checking this offset are disclosed. The copy panel is tinted a dissimilar base color from the original panel.(Group 2) The original and copy panels can be formed separately, and joined into a single "virtual" sheet.(Group 3) The original and copy panels can be formed of a single sheet of CF C2S paper stock. A separate, intermediate transfer panel having a CB-coated surface is interposed between the original and copy panels to effect two-sided reproduction.(Group 4) The form can be of laminated construction of off-the-shelf carbonless paper stock to obtain the coating arrangements of the various configurations.

    • A recordkeeping book has a front cover, a back cover and an accordion-folded strip of paper extending therebetween. The strip is divided longitudinally into a "left" portion, disposed within the covers, and a "right" portion, extending out from the covers. Information entered on the front surface of the left portion is reproduced on the back surface of the right portion when the right portion is folded underneath the left portion. Information entered on the back surface of the left portion is reproduced on the front surface of the right portion when the right portion is folded over the left portion. Means for effecting the reproduction of information entered on both surfaces of the left portion onto both surfaces of the right portion are disclosed and include a "male", or "CB" carbonless copy treatment applied to the front and back surfaces of the left portion, and a "female" or "CF" carbonless copy treatment applied to the front and back surfaces of the right portion. Method and apparatus are disclosed.

    • An improvement in combination with a postage meter including a rotary drum having a periphery adapted for feeding a sheet in a path of travel. The improvement comprises: a first device for sensing a time interval during which a sheet is linearly displaced a predetermined distance in the path of travel; a d.c. motor coupled to the drum for rotation of the drum; a second device for sensing angular displacement of the drum; and a computer coupled to the first and second sensing devices and to the d.c. motor; wherein the computer responds to the first sensing device for providing respective amounts representative of desired angular displacements of the drum during successive sampling time periods, responds to the second sensing device for providing respective amounts representative of actual angular displacements of the drum during successive sampling time periods, compensates for the difference between desired and actual angular displacements and generates a d.c. motor control signal for controlling rotation of the motor to cause the linear displacement of the periphery of the drum to substantially match the linear displacement of the sheet during respective sampling time periods.

    • A postage meter attachment or conversion apparatus is disclosed that will effectively convert a manually lever settable postage meter into an electrically controlled postage meter. The conversion apparatus is easily assembled to and disassembled from a standard lever settable postage meter. Each lever of the meter is settable simultaneously. The motion of the drive mechanism of the conversion apparatus conforms to the arcuate motion of the meter setting levers, thus eliminating the need for precise alignment between the levers and the drive mechanism. The conversion apparatus can be used to make the mechanical meter compatible in an electrical environment containing equipment such as a computer, a digital scale, and other postage system processing devices.

    • An interface for facilitating user resetting of a mechanical registering mechanism interconnects a decrementing register with a remote meter resetting lock. The user is provided with the current lock combination after debiting the user's account for the amount to be incremented into the register. With the lock released, a resetting knob is rotatable to drive a gear train which engages a pinion on a register numeral wheel. Rotation of the knob initially releases numeral wheel lockout combs to permit the gear train to advance the numeral wheel. A separate gear train is provided for each register wheel to be reset with a Geneva transfer tooth in the driven gear train indexing an adjacent gear train which drives a higher order numeral wheel. The interface additionally provides for conventional meter resetting by authorized personnel through the implementation of manually actuatable thumb wheels for optionally driving the gear trains.

    • Rotary operated character selection apparatus is provided for postage meters having a rotating print drum and at least one print wheel in the drum for printing a selected character on an envelope or label. One set of print wheels may be provided for value selection, and another set of print wheels may be provided for date selection. The print wheels are turned by rotating print wheel gears, located adjacent an opening in an outside surface of the drum, by rotating the drum to a preselection position to engage the print wheel gear with a mating gear located outside of the drum, and rotating the mating gear until the proper print wheel character is selected. Devices are provided to determine the rotational angle of the drum and the positions of the print wheels, and an appropriate control system is provided, preferably with an input keyboard for selecting the value of postage to be dispensed and printed, and the date.

    • A mailing system including a postage meter adaptable to either a high-speed mailing machine capable of parallel postal value selection or a low-speed mailing machine capable of serial value selection is disclosed. The postage meter includes a print drum with printing value members. A rod extends outwardly from the drum. The rod contains linear racks that are axially located above the horizontal centerline of the rod. The linear racks interact with the value members to provide the proper value setting. Attached to the postage meter are a plurality of cross-over shafts with pinion gears. The gears engage the racks to facilitate value selection. In the high-speed mailing machine, a series of drive members engage the shafts. Apparatus within the high-speed mailing machine causes the shafts to rotate in a parallel fashion to allow for postal value selection to facilitate postal printing. In the low-speed mailing machine, one drive member engages on e shaft of the postage meter. Apparatus within the low-speed mailing machine causes the pinion gear to engage a rack to provide the proper print value. The apparatus in the low-speed machine also causes the drum member to rotate so that the other racks can be serially acted upon by that shaft-pinion gear arrangement to provide the proper postal value to facilitate postal printing. In accordance with this embodiment, a locking device is utilized to prevent inadvertent movement of the adjacent rack members when one rack is being adjusted.
