    • Apparatus is provided for controlling the velocity of a portion of a load in accordance with a trapazoidal-shaped velocity versus time profile. The apparatus includes a d.c. motor having an output shaft for driving the load; instrumentalities for sensing angular displacement of the motor output shaft; a microprocessor including a clock for generating successive sampling time periods, means for providing first counts respectively representative of successive desired angular displacements of the motor output shaft during successive sampling time periods to cause the load portion to be moved in accordance with a predetermined trapezoidal-shaped velocity versus time profile, means responsive to the sensing means for providing second counts respectively representatiave of actual angular displacements of the motor output shaft during successive sampling time periods, and means for compensating for the difference between the first and second counts during each successive sampling time period and generating a pulse width modulated control signal for controlling the d.c. motor, the motor control signal causing the actual angular displacement of the motor output shaft to substantially match the desired angular displacement of the motor output shaft during successive sampling time periods, whereby the load portion is moved substantially in accordance with the predetermined trapezoidal-shaped velocity versus time profile; and a signal amplifying device for operably coupling the motor control signal to the d.c. motor.

    • A method and associated apparatus is provided for using data stored in one non-volatile memory to locate the next memory address in which to write data in another non-volatile memory of an electronic postage meter, comprising the steps of and associated apparatus for providing a first non-volatile memory for storing data therein including cumulative piece count data corresponding to the number of completed postage transactions, providing a second non-volatile memory for storing accounting data sequentially therein for each one of a predetermined number of trip cycles of the postage meter which number corresponds to the number of individually addressable trip cycle memory locations in the second non-volatile memory and defines a modulus of the second non-volatile memory, retrieving the cumulative piece count data from the first non-volatile memory during a power up cycle, dividing the cumulative piece count data by the modulus of the second non-volatile memory, and using the remainder resulting from the division to locate the next individually addressable trip cycle memory location in the sequence of memory locations in the second non-volatile memory for writing the accounting data for the first trip cycle of the meter after completion of the power up cycle.

    • A data access system comprises a plurality of intelligent terminals capable of selectively receiving data from a data bank by means of barge-in telephone lines. Each terminal includes a basic terminal into which application modules and device control modules may be plugged. The application modules contain programs enabling the computer to perform specified functions in conjunction with certain stored subroutines within the basic terminal. A device control module enables communication by telephone with the data bank. A terminal subscribes to the data bank by transferring selectively subscription data to memory within the terminal. In one embodiment, subscription data identifying by serial numbers the terminals which are to become subscribers is circulated on subscription barge-in telephone lines. If a terminal calls a subscription line on which there appears the serial number for that terminal, the subscription data for that terminal is permanently stored within the application module of the terminal. The text data to which the terminal has subscribed is retrieved from the data bank by calling a barge-in telephone line (on which such data is circulated) if the stored subscription data shows that the subscription is in effect.

    • An improvement in combination with apparatus including rotary means, wherein the rotary means includes a periphery having indicia printing means and is adapted for feeding a sheet in a path of travel. The improvement comprises: a first device for sensing a time interval during which a sheet having a leading edge is linearly displaced a predetermined distance in the path of travel; a d.c. motor coupled to the rotary mean for rotation of the rotary means; a second device for sensing angular displacement of the rotary means and a computer coupled to the first and second sensing devices and to the d.c. motor; wherein the computer responds to the first sensing device for providing respective amounts representative of desired angular displacements of the rotary means during successive sampling time periods, responds to the second sensing device for providing respective amounts representative of actual angular displacements of the rotary means during successive sampling time periods, compensates for the difference between desired and actual angular displacements and generates a d.c. motor control signal for controlling rotation of the motor to cause the linear displacement of the indicia printing means to initially engage the sheet in the path of travel a predetermined marginal distance from the leading edge of the sheet.
