    • An apparatus and method are provided for synthesizing a variable frequency sinusoidal waveform. The apparatus and method exploit octant symmetry properties of sine and cosine waveforms, when taken together. The digital frequency synthesis apparatus includes a phase signal and a phase-to-amplitude converter. The phase signal indicates a desired phase angle of the sinusoidal waveform. The phase-to-amplitude converter is coupled to the phase signal. The phase-to-amplitude converter provides a desired amplitude sample corresponding to the desired phase angle, where the desired amplitude sample is derived from amplitude samples corresponding to an octant of the sinusoidal waveform. The phase-to-amplitude converter includes a Haar Transform-based coarse octant amplitude sample generator that computes Haar coefficients corresponding to the phase signal and transforms the Haar coefficients into the desired amplitude sample.

    • A novel passive peel system for a printer is provided for peeling labels off of a backing. Labels secured to a backing is defined as media. The printer has a printhead for printing indicia on the labels and a platen roller. A first embodiment of the passive peel system includes a peel tear bar proximate to the platen roller for bending the backing therearound and a separator bar proximate to the peel tear bar for separating the backing from the labels after the labels have been printed on by the printhead. The media passes over the peel tear bar, the backing passes between the peel tear bar and the separator bar, and the labels pass over the separator bar. The labels can be peeled with low tension or with zero tension on the backing. A second embodiment of the passive peel system includes a peel tear bar and an anti-buckle bar mounted proximate to the peel tear bar for preventing buckling of the media as the media passes over the peel tear bar. The media passes between the peel tear bar and said anti-buckle bar. The labels can be peeled with low tension on the backing. The third embodiment of the passive peel system is the same as the first embodiment with the addition of the anti-buckle bar of the second embodiment. The labels can be peeled with low tension or with zero tension on the backing.

    • Electrical components projecting outwardly from the storage tank portion of an electric water heater are shielded from foam insulation material being injected into an insulation space between the tank and an outer jacket portion of the water heater by a hollow, open sided foam dam structure extending through a jacket opening and circumscribing the electrical components. Force exerting projections on the dam engage the interior side surface of the jacket and forcibly hold the inner side of the dam structure in sealing engagement with the tank. The projections also hold an outer side peripheral lip of the dam in a an outwardly and resiliently deflected orientation in which it is sealingly pressed inwardly against the outer side surface of the jacket around the periphery of the opening therein to prevent injected foam from being forced outwardly through the jacket opening.

    • A fuel-fired water heater has a series of control and operating components which, with electrical power being supplied to the water heater circuitry via a power switch, are electrically actuatable in a predetermined sequence to supply combustion heat to water contained in a tank portion of the water heater to return the temperature of the water to a heated setpoint temperature in response to the water temperature falling below such setpoint temperature. LED diagnostic indicating lights are wired into the water heater circuitry in a manner such that each indicating light is associated with a different one of the electrically coupled components. As the components are sequentially actuated during a water heating cycle, the LED lights are successively illuminated. If one of the components malfunctions during such heating cycle, one or more of the indicating lights remains unilluminated, with the last illuminated light being indicative of the last component in the sequence which functioned properly, thereby facilitating the ready identification of the component which malfunctioned. The LED indicating lights are supported in a single row on a housing-mounted circuit board to which electrical indicating light leads from the water heater control circuit are connected. One of the LED lights is a power indicating light and, like the other indicating lights, has a resistor in an electrical trace leading to the light. The power indicating light and its associated resistor are physically isolated from the other indicating lights and their associated resistors by an interior housing barrier wall.

    • A method and apparatus for applying liquid adhesive to the outer surface of a stack of laminations are provided which results in more precise adhesive application. The laminations are placed on a mandrel which is mounted for reciprocal movement along the longitudinal axis of the mandrel. The adhesive is applied by roller pads which abut the laminations during mandrel movement. The direction and speed of roller pad rotation is coordinated with the mandrel speed and the direction of mandrel movement. This coordinated movement prevents lamination fanning and adhesive smear during application of the adhesive to the lamination stack. Means are provided for adjusting the rate at which adhesive is supplied to the roller pads from an associated adhesive reservoir and for adjusting the pressure with which the roller pads abut the lamination stack. These adjustments in conjunction with the roller pad applicators enable the apparatus of this invention to apply adhesive between the facing surfaces of adjacent laminations in a more precise manner so that large areas of the facing surfaces and the inboard edge of the lamination stack remain free of adhesive material. Thereafter, the stack is clamped under predetermined axial pressure, and the adhesive is cured.

    • Convective heat traps are installed at the cold water inlet and hot water outlet of a water heater. Each heat trap has a tubular body with two axially spaced apart resilient flapper members transversely extending across the interior of the body and being hinged on opposite sides thereof. The heat trap at the cold water inlet is coaxially disposed within a dip tube. In one alternate structure, flapper members are mounted directly on the dip tube, and in another alternate structure an external annular seal element is mounted on the dip tube or heat trap body, with a flapper member being integrally formed with the seal element.
