    • A video decoding system includes an embedded microcontroller that provides memory arbitration in addition to processing and control functions. The microcontroller architecture provides a first-in, first-out (FIFO) queue for storing memory access instructions and a processing logic for executing software instructions. The microcontroller processing logic determines which components within the decoding system need access to memory and stores a sequence of memory access instructions into the FIFO queue. Each memory access instruction is associated with one decoder component. When main memory becomes available, a memory access instruction is dequeued from the FIFO and transmitted to the associated decoder component, which is then permitted to access memory. The microcontroller receives indicator signals from the decoder components that indicate when the decoder components have finished accessing memory and, thus, when the memory device is available for subsequent transactions.

    • A video filter unit is described which is implemented as a three-stage filter comprising a vertical filter, a horizontal decimation filter, and a horizontal interpolation filter. The three stages of the filter unit preferably connect serially with the vertical filter comprising the input first stage, the horizontal decimation filter comprising the second stage and the horizontal interpolation filter comprising the third stage which provides the output filtered image from the filter unit. As such, the video data to be filtered is provided to the vertical filter which provides its output to the horizontal decimation filter. After horizontal decimation, which can be disabled if desired (i.e., no horizontal decimation), the video data is then horizontally interpolated. The horizontal interpolation filter stage can also be disabled if desired. The vertical filter can be configured to operate either as a decimation filter or an interpolation filter. The vertical filter is a four-tap filter and thus calculates weighted averages of four video values (e.g. luminance values) at a time. The horizontal decimation filter preferably is implemented as a two-tap filter and thus averages two video values at a time. Lastly, the horizontal interpolation filter comprises an eight-tap filter and, accordingly, calculates a weighted average of eight video values.

The system further comprises a blending system used for blending the adjusted 4:2:2 chroma with the received 4:2:2 chroma based on a control input provided by a motion indication signal. The method comprises regenerating a 4:2:0 chroma from a received 4:2:2 chroma using an algorithm. The method further comprises generating an adjusted 4:2:2 chroma using the regenerated 4:2:0 chroma using another algorithm. The method further comprises blending the adjusted 4:2:2 chroma with the received 4:2:2 chroma to generate an improved 4:2:2 chroma.

    • An optical disk system is presented which stores disk- and user-specific settings, along with an associated method. The optical disk system includes a disk drive unit for retrieving identification data and encoded video data stored upon an optical disk, an input device for inputting user settings, and a microprocessor memory unit having a non-volatile portion for storing the identification data and the user settings. Information specific to optical disks (e.g., DVDs) and users is stored within the non-volatile portion of the microprocessor memory unit. The user settings may include, for example, spoken language, video display format, audio volume setting, and subtitle language. The user settings may be retrieved and invoked, conveniently allowing a user to view a presentation (e.g., a movie), or to continue viewing an interrupted presentation, without having to reselect viewing and listening preferences. The identification data may include a portion of a title of the optical disk. A value corresponding to the identification data (e.g., a checksum) may be stored in order to minimize storage requirements. The non-volatile portion of the microprocessor memory unit may include, for example, flash memory or electrically erasable programmable random access memory (EEPROM) which maintains stored contents even in the absence of applied electrical power. A sleep timer function may be activated which requires periodic user input to continue playback and to save a current playback location.

    • An audio decoder is described which supports simple sound-effect generation. The audio decoder includes a direct access pulse code modulation (PCM) first-in-first-out buffer (FIFO) to support simple sound effect generation. In one embodiment, the audio decoder additionally includes an input buffer, a decoding module, and an output interface. The input buffer buffers incoming data frames for the decoding module to retrieve and convert to a sequence of decoded audio samples. The FIFO is configured to receive and buffer audio sound effect samples from a control component external to the audio decoder. The output interface is configurable to retrieve decoded audio samples from the decoding module and audio sound effect samples from the FIFO. Any retrieved audio sound effect samples are included in a digital audio output signal provided by the output interface. The digital audio output signal may be provided directly to a digital-to-analog converter for sound reproduction. The availability of the FIFO for direct writing of audio samples by control components of the system provides desirable system features at negligible cost. A control component of the system is provided with the ability to easily generate test tones, to produce audio feedback to assist in user-control manipulation, and to support new system features such as alarm clocks and timers.

    • A CMOS oscillator is disclosed using an inverter in which a pair of control terminals are employed to invoke various sized devices which control the flow of current. The inverter gain is determined by the size of the CMOS devices employed. A tuned circuit coupled to the inverter causes it to oscillate at the frequency of parallel resonance. The control terminals are coupled to the inverter invoke transistors that are sized as desired to establish the current flow and gain in the inverter. The current flow is controlled to optimize the gain of the inverter in terms of the frequency of oscillation. A Schmitt trigger can be employed to clean up the oscillator output for digital clock source applications.
