    • An improved method and apparatus for processing elongated logs to give maximum production of lumber is described wherein the log is initially cut to present four flattened faces thereon with wany edge regions between adjacent faces, followed by first partially milling the wany edge regions with severance of boards from opposed log faces, and thereafter completing the milling of the wany edge regions with subsequent removal of additional finished boards. Such stepwise partial milling of the wany edge regions materially increases the amount of lumber obtainable from a given log, as compared with prior practices. In preferred forms, the log is processed in an improved apparatus including log turning stations having a pair of pivotally mounted, opposed log-gripping arms; the respective arms are supported on a circular frame which is itself rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the log.

    • Log processing apparatus comprises a cutting machine that defines a substantially vertical cutting plane, feed mechanism that feeds a log through the cutting machine in substantially lengthwise horizontal motion parallel to the cutting plane, a measuring station spaced horizontally and vertically from the cutting machine, and transfer mechanism by which a log is carried in horizontal translatory motion from the measuring station to the feed mechanism. At the measuring station, or before the log reaches that station, it is established in an optimum rotational orientation which is thereafter maintained through transfer of support of the log to a set of jaws on the feed mechanism. At the measuring station a relationship is ascertained between a calculated plane that extends lengthwise in the log and a reference plane defined at the measuring station that has a fixed relationship to the cutting plane. The transfer mechanism comprises supporting elements by which a log is confined against all motion except such translatory motion as is imparted to it by the transfer mechanism. The feed mechanism comprises two pairs of jaws, each pair arranged to clampingly grip a log without causing any shifting of it but also arranged for controlled lateral shifting in unison when gripping a log. Either the transfer mechanism or the feed mechanism translatingly elevates a log to the level for cutting, and after the feed mechanism jaws grip the log they shift it laterally to establish it with said calculated plane in a desired relationship to the cutting plane.

    • A bandsaw mill comprises two vertical bandwheels for receiving and guiding a bandsaw. The bandwheels are mounted on a frame for rotation about horizontally spaced-apart axes. A bridge suspends the frame above the position of a log with the axes of the bandwheels being generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the log. The log is between the bandwheels. The bandsaw mill includes a mechanism for raising and lowering the frame, a mechanism for moving the bridge longitudinally along the position of the log and clamps for securing the log in a generally horizontal position. A method of sawing the log comprises moving the log into a generally horizontal position, securing the log in the position and moving the horizontally oriented bandsaw in a longitudinal direction along the log to make horizontal cuts along the log.

    • A lumber inspection and optimization system is disclosed combining the speed of electro-optic scanning for flaw detection with electronic data manipulation and computation for optimizing the utilization of the lumber in accordance with an order entry list specifying the dimensions, grade and priority of products desired to be cut from each board inspected by the system. The system receives input data from an order entry device and an electro-optical scanner. Digital scan data from the electro-optical scanner is electronically processed to form a flaw data buffer containing the edge location of all the detected flaws enlarged to compensate for defective material usually surrounding each flaw. Optimization of the material is accomplished by electronically comparing the order entry data with the location of the flaws in the flaw buffer to generate cut line data indicative of where the board is to be cut. The cut line data may be used to either actuate a saw to cut the lumber at the locations specified by the cut line data or actuate a marker to mark the lumber at the specified locations. When the order entry list includes products having permitted defects, the disclosed system includes a defect classification input device permitting a human inspector to insert defect classification data into the flaw data buffer prior to optimization. The preferred embodiment utilizes a mini computer programmed to process the flaw data, optimize the utilization of the board inspected and generate the cut line data .

    • The sawing of an elongated workpiece, such as a log or cant, by feeding the workpiece longitudinally through a saw; sensing the longitudinal configuration of a longitudinal side surface of the workpiece on one side only of the workpiece as the latter passes through the saw; and orientating the workpiece relative to the saw in accordance with the sensed configuration to saw the workpiece longitudinally substantially parallel to the sensed configuration. For the sawing of a crooked workpiece, the configuration of a longitudinally extending concave side surface is sensed and the workpiece is sawn "round the curve" substantially parallel to the sensed concave configuration the workpiece is orientated by resiliently exerting lateral pressure thereon on the side thereof on which the longitudinal configuration is sensed. The invention covers the method of sawing workpieces, as well as apparatus for sawing and for controlling the sawing process.
