    • A lumber handling method identifies the existence and direction of crowning in dimensional lumber and automatically orients the board and specifies a cutting direction prior to a saw cutting the board into one or more board segments to be used in a structural board assembly, such as in a truss or a wall panel. Crowning is a curve that occurs along a narrow convex edge of a board, wherein the curve is about an axis that is perpendicular to the board's widest face. In some examples, a board's crown is detected by a row of photoelectric sensors. In some examples, the method involves calibrating the sensors by passing a straight board past the sensors. In some examples, the convex and/or concave edges of the board are marked.

    • A sharp chain charger and infeed device for feeding logs in a desired orientation to a sawing machine is characterized by alignment and displacement assemblies for accurately positioning a succession of logs on a sharp chain drive mechanism. The alignment assembly includes a pair of pivotal arms for laterally aligning a log with the longitudinal axis of the sawing machine. A pair of longitudinal rollers are connected with the alignment arms to rotate the log to a selected rotary position. The displacement assembly displaces the alignment assembly longitudinally in the direction of the sawing machine and downwardly beneath the sharp chain, whereby the log is deposited on the moving chain with both longitudinal and vertical components while the desired rotational and aligned orientation of the log is retained for transport to the sawing machine.

    • The invention relates to a method and device for turning a log. In the method, the turning is carried out in two stages in such a way that the first stage comprises the turning of the log to a somewhat oblique position in relation to the transverse direction of two rollers (2) rotating in opposite directions, and the second stage comprises the turning of the log by means of the rollers in a controlled manner onto a conveyor (11), which is at the bottom of a trough (14). The device according to the invention has two rollers (2) rotating in opposite directions and, adjacent to each roller, a preferably V-shaped blade (3), which effects the first stage of the turning. The second stage of turning, effected by the rollers (2), is controlled, a factor which provides a considerable improvement in efficiency.

    • Log turning apparatus is disclosed for rotating an axially travelling log about its longitudinal axis, use being made of a pair of spaced rotatably supported spiked rollers that are arranged on opposite sides of the log, each of said rollers being contained in a plane angularly arranged relative to the axis of the log. The rollers are biased together into frictional peripheral engagement with the peripheral surface of the log, whereupon the rollers are axially displaced in opposite directions to rotate the log about its axis. Preferably the rollers are rotatably supported at the ends of support arms the other ends of which are pivotally connected with the frame of the apparatus. The log is normally horizontal and the rollers are normally vertical and contained in a common plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the log, said support arms being connected with the frame for pivotal movement about either horizontal or vertical pivot axes.
