The heated cylinder includes a cylinder jacket having an outer jacket layer with good heat conductivity, a heat insulating layer positioned contiguous to and inside of the outer jacket layer, and at least one heating system positioned outside the cylinder jacket adapted to heat at least a surface of the cylinder. The process includes heating a surface of the cylinder to a temperature between about 120 and 250° C. with the at least one heating system, and guiding a material web over a portion of the surface of the cylinder such that the material web contacts the surface of the cylinder for a period of at least about 50 ms.

Method includes subjecting fibrous material web to electromagnetic waves in the form of high-frequency waves. Device includes a fibrous material web support that supports travel of fibrous material web and a rotating cylinder. Rotating cylinder receives fibrous material web from fibrous material web support, and fibrous material web support is arranged outside fibrous material web in relation to the surface of the rotating cylinder. At least one electromagnetic wave transmitter is also included. Rotating cylinder conveys fibrous material web past the at least one electromagnetic wave transmitter, electromagnetic wave transmitter produces electromagnetic waves laterally to material fibrous web, and electromagnetic waves balances out moisture variances laterally to fibrous material web by drying moister areas of fibrous material web more intensely than dried areas of fibrous material web.

    • The headbox for a paper making machine includes an outlet duct extending across the machine width. The outlet duct is defined by a fixed duct wall below and by a movable duct wall above which are oriented to converge and define an outlet slot. The movable duct wall is movable by a lifting appliance to adjust the space between the duct walls and also the pressure on the stock suspension passing the outlet slot. The movable duct wall has a duct wall beam disposed on it. A support beam for the movable duct wall extends across the machine. Between the duct wall beam and the support beam is a pressure cushion which acts against the pressure in the outlet duct. The lifting appliance is pivoted on the rigid headbox housing and on the support beam. The lifting appliance meets the movable duct wall beam at its axial end to avoid bending moments on that wall. Alternatively, the lifting appliance meets the support beam axially outward of the axial ends of the movable duct wall and a flexible connection between the movable duct wall and the appliance avoids bending moments on the movable duct wall.

    • A roll for pressure treatment of paper webs has a stationary shaft which is spacedly surrounded by the concave cylindrical internal surface of a rotary sleeve. The shaft carries a row of pressure shoes which define therewith plenum chambers for a hydraulic fluid serving to urge the convex cylindrical external surfaces of the shoes toward the internal surface of the sleeve. Each external surface has a centrally located primary hydrostatic bearing pocket which communicates with the respective plenum chamber and a set of four auxiliary hydrostatic bearing pockets which surround the respective primary pocket and receive only that hydraulic fluid which overflows the lands between the primary pocket and the auxiliary pockets. The pockets in each external surface are surrounded by a marginal portion of such surface and the primary pocket has arms which extend to the marginal portion and each of which is flanked by a pair of auxiliary pockets. The arms of the primary pocket are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve and/or to an axis which is normal to the longitudinal axis. The auxiliary pockets form groups which make oblique angles with the two axes. If the external surfaces of the shoes are rectangular, the groups of auxiliary pockets extend substantially diagonally of the respective external surfaces.
