    • A roll for pressure treatment of paper webs has a stationary shaft which is spacedly surrounded by the concave cylindrical internal surface of a rotary sleeve. The shaft carries a row of pressure shoes which define therewith plenum chambers for a hydraulic fluid serving to urge the convex cylindrical external surfaces of the shoes toward the internal surface of the sleeve. Each external surface has a centrally located primary hydrostatic bearing pocket which communicates with the respective plenum chamber and a set of four auxiliary hydrostatic bearing pockets which surround the respective primary pocket and receive only that hydraulic fluid which overflows the lands between the primary pocket and the auxiliary pockets. The pockets in each external surface are surrounded by a marginal portion of such surface and the primary pocket has arms which extend to the marginal portion and each of which is flanked by a pair of auxiliary pockets. The arms of the primary pocket are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve and/or to an axis which is normal to the longitudinal axis. The auxiliary pockets form groups which make oblique angles with the two axes. If the external surfaces of the shoes are rectangular, the groups of auxiliary pockets extend substantially diagonally of the respective external surfaces.

    • A ledge for resiliently supporting a paper making machine wire has a head ledge which extends across the direction of travel of the wire and over which the wire can slide. The head ledge is rigidly connected to a movable support ledge which also extends across the direction of travel of the wire and is guided on a stationary support structure. Between the movable support ledge and the stationary structure there is a resilient push device which can displace the movable support ledge together with the head ledge between a position of rest away from the wire and an operating position in which the head ledge is pressed with a predetermined force against the wire. The stationary structure has several guide arms distributed over the length of the support ledge which are the exclusive means for guiding the movable support ledge. Several guide arms arranged in pairs are provided which grip around the support ledge, in the manner of a clamp.

    • The invention concerns a press roll having adjustable sag capability, principally for use in paper making machinery, or the like. The press roll includes a hollow, rotatable shell supported by a non-rotatable yoke and hydraulic support elements between the shell and the yoke transfer the press forces from the shell to the yoke. Each end region of the yoke is supported by a stationary support block. The connection between the yoke and the stationary support block is at a particular location. A mating roll cooperating with the press roll is supported by bearings longitudinally positioned approximately at the location of the connection between the support block and the yoke. An additional hydraulic supporting element is defined between the roll shell and the yoke and the longitudinal location of the yoke support piece and the mating roll bearing. The roll shell is supported on a stationary guide element with respect to which the roll shell rotates. The guide element permits the yoke to shift under the pressure, but prevents the yoke from rotating. The length of the roll shell is sufficient to extend into the region where it can be supported by the supporting element. The particular yoke support provided comprises a stationary support block and a tubular cantilever member that extends between the roll shell and the yoke. The yoke bears against the inside of the cantilever member while the roll shell bears against the outside. Packings are provided for sealing the roll shell on the support block. Finally, a planetary gear arrangement located inside the roll shell serves to drive the roll shell to rotate with respect to the yoke.
