A first spring system is associated with the pair of front brake assemblies and a second spring system is associated with the rear brake assemblies. The first spring system provides a different force than the second spring system to cause the rear brake assemblies to be engaged a predetermined period of time ahead of the pair of front brake assemblies without any design change in the hydraulic control apparatus.

    • In a brake valve of the type in which a given ratio is maintained between a master pressure developed by a brake pedal and an actual brake pressure, an arrangement is provided for continuous, rather than stepwise, adjustment of this ratio. The brake valve includes a control piston which is subjected to the master pressure and which, by the displacement thereof, opens and closes connecting channels between an accumulator containing a primary pressure fluid and a brake, as well as between the brake and a fluid collecting tank. The control piston and a measurement piston apply counter forces to the arms of a balance beam whose lever ratio determines the degree of feedback of the instantaneous brake pressure to the control piston. A stop is provided in the path of the axis of the control piston, which limits the stroke of the piston, to prevent the overloading of the balance beam during abnormally high braking pressures such as occur, for instance, during panic braking.

    • The invention is directed to a fail-safe brake arrangement for hydraulically powered road rollers. The operating means of the brake system are completely separate from the normal road brake of the roller thereby enabling the fail-safe brake to be manually operated by the driver in an emergency situation. The brake also operates automatically as soon as the hydraulic system of the roller ceases to function. The fail-safe brake according to the invention utilizes the oil pressure to compress one or more springs in a spring brake chamber. As soon as the oil pressure falls to zero or below a certain value, the energy stored in the springs is utilized to apply the brake and bring the vehicle to a halt.

    • A hydrostatic transmission has an engine-driven, bidirectional, variable-displacement drive pump connected in circuit with a bidirectional, variable-displacement propelling motor. A charging pump is also connected to the circuit of the drive pump and the propelling motor. A brake assembly normally locks the output shaft of the propelling motor against rotation and releases same only while being supplied with a hydraulic brake release signal. The control system for the hydrostatic transmission comprises a speed control valve actuated manually to deliver fluid pressure signals to servo controls for adjusting the outputs from the drive pump and the propelling motor, and a brake control valve pilot-operated to deliver the brake release signal to the brake assembly. Also included are a charge sensor valve and a speed control sensor valve. The two sensor valves cooperate to cause the output from the charging pump to pilot-actuate the brake control valve, for the delivery of the brake release signal, only when the charging pump output pressure rises to a predetermined level and, simultaneously, when the speed control valve is being manipulated. Whenever the charging pump output pressure falls below the predetermined level, the sensor valves cause the brake control valve to terminate the production of the brake release signal and to drain the signal output ports of the speed control valve, thereby causing the transmission to stop the vehicle and so avoiding cavitation in the drive pump and the propelling motor.
