    • A rotary web shearing machine equipped with pairs of rotating helical blades, the improvement for adjusting the clearance between the blades which makes it unnecessary to adjust the blades by their individual holders while the machine is stationary, but makes it possible to effect this adjustment without shutting down the machine. This is accomplished either by providing that one of the blades remains in a fixed axial position, while the companion cutting blade holding shaft is moved axially with respect to the fixed blade. This is accomplished by the novel mechanism on the end of the shaft of said blade mounted in a special bearing and housing and equipped with an adjusting screw and nut which permits imparting of axial motion to the shaft while it is in rotation if desired and thus effecting a variation in the clearance between the pair of helical blades eliminating the necessity of shutting the machine down and resorting to manual adjustment of the blade holders to effect proper clearance. This adjustment becomes necessary frequently as the blades wear or their cutting action is otherwise impaired. I may also apply the same mechanism to each member of the pair of co-acting blades and obtain a greater adjustment in the clearance between blades. I may also effect this adjustment while the blades are stationary when occasion demands.

    • A steerable rotatable member such as a pulley, sprocket or timing gear which can be mounted on a shaft so that the plane of the rotatable member may be positioned at selected angles other than a 90.degree. angle to the axis of rotation of the shaft. A torque transmitting member, commonly in the shape of a planar disc, is used to operatively connect the shaft and the rim of the rotatable member. The disc radially elongates and laterally flexes as the rotatable member rotates. A sleeve member may be used to connect the disc to the shaft. When used as a driver, a key may be used to transmit power from the shaft to the sleeve. The use of an elongated groove in the shaft permits the rotatable member to be adjustably moved to different locations along the axial length of the shaft.

    • A method for lapping of gun barrels on fully assembied firearms is provided using cartridges fitted with lapping bullets impregnated with abrasive. The present invention provides a process for simultaneously impregnating a quantity of lapping bullets with an abrasive, in which a quantity of unlubricated bullets are placed in a tumbler with steel balls and quantity of the desired abrasive. The speed of rotation of the tumbler, and the shape of the tumbler are selected so that the bullet/abrasive/tumbling media mix folds on itself, thus providing an even impregnation of abrasive on the bullets and minimizing any deformation of the bullets. The mixture is allowed to tumble for a period of time, typically about an hour, after which a sufficient quantity of the abrasive is firmly embedded on the surface of each bullet. The abrasive impregnated bullets can then be coated with a protective and lubricating finish, such as carnauba wax, if desired. The abrasive-impregnated bullets can then be sized and lubricated and loaded into a cartridge containing gun powder and a wad positioned against the base of each bullet. Using this procedure, it is possible to manufacture in quantity a series of lapping cartridges having coarse, medium, fine and polishing grits impregnated on the bullets. Pressure (Fire) Lapping can then be carried out in stages using the loaded cartridges by firing through the barrel a series of lapping bullets impregnated with coarse abrasive, followed in order by the lapping bullets with the medium, fine and polishiing grits. The barrel is cleaned and checked after every ten rounds or so, or when changing from one type grit to another. This process removes dimensional variations and roughness in the bore, and produces a gun barrel which is more accurate, and less susceptible to copper, carbon and lead fouling.

    • A bottom sheet storage and feeder apparatus for use with one or more load forming or stacking machines for the purpose of providing one or more bottom sheets for protecting the load. The apparatus chooses a bottom sheet stored in one of a plurality of vertically stacked bins and sequentially moves one or more of the individual bottom sheets longitudinally to a destination location in a plurality of lay down patterns. The machine is constructed with a frame which supports a plurality of vertically spaced storage bins. A lifting assembly, transported by a transfer assembly, includes at least one laterally positioned vacuum member which engages and lifts an individual bottom sheet from one of the storage bins and delivers the selected bottom sheet to a destination location in a selected lay down position. Several lay down patterns may be made by subsequent cycles of the lift and transfer assembly from the storage bins to the destination location.

    • An unwind stand for positioning and controlling the unwinding of large paper rolls to processing machines is mounted on wheels riding on rails and motor driven through hydraulic motor to providing gripping and longitudinal movement of the rolls. Swinging gripping arms are mounted on the stand and disposed to grip the ends of the roll and raise it above the floor and hold it in position and provides for unwinding. A device is provided for final axial adjustment in alignment with the processing machine in a transverse direction and a device for gripping the rails to hold the machine in a fixed position and to prevent its tipping over. The entire stand and all its functioning elements is operated from a platform located on a cab in which are positioned various control elements for operation of the hydraulic components of the stand.

    • In the herein automatic conveyor system for conveying corrugated cardboard sheets from a sheet making machine or the like, the sheets are delivered to a stacker conveyor and the aligning system for the sheets in the stack includes back-stops spaced from the stacker end of the stacker conveyor and against which the sheets are discharged from the conveyor, adjustable side aligners, adjustable against the opposite side edges of the sheets in the stack, and a flexible longitudinal aligner opposite the back-stops with a mechanism for flexing the longitudinal aligner against the sheets sequentially from one end to the other along its length. The longitudinal aligner includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced rollers along a flexible plate and coacting cams on a rotating shaft engaged with the rollers, the cams being circumferentially offset relatively to one another sequentially so as to push adjacent portions of the plate toward the sheets sequentially from end to end as the cams are rotated. Resilient element draw the plate and rollers toward the cams. There is also a safety device actuated when movement of the back-stops is obstructed including articulated braces extended from the support for the back-stops and resiliently held in extended position so that when the back-stops strike an obstruction during the downward movement of the stacker end, the articulated braces buckle and actuate a switch to first raise the back-stops and then stop the stacker operation.

    • A rotary shear machine is described having a plurality of oppositely rotating hollow cylinder pairs carrying helical blades for transversely shearing several continuously moving webs perpendicular to their directions of travel. Each cylinder pair includes a separate reversible DC motor drive and an electronic digital control system regulating the motor drive for cutting sheets of predetermined lengths from the respective webs. A unique feature of the machine is a web feed and pull roller system having an independent drive for engaging and feeding the continuously moving webs into the respective helical blade shears and pulling sheets from the respective shears as they are cut from the continuously moving webs. The upstream feed roller system includes means for sensing web velocity and generating electronic pulses for input into the control means regulating the respective reversible DC motor drives driving the respective helical blade shears. The feed roller system further includes means for continuously generating electronic pulses even though the velocity sensing component is not in contact with the moving web. The proximity of the web velocity sensing means to the helical blade shears enables the helical blades to sever sheets from the respective webs with a high degree of precision and uniformity.
