    • A separator for shredded tobacco has a column provided at its bottom with a perforated plate inclined towards a discharge duct. An entry duct for the shredded tobacco and a feed pipe for air propels the shredded tobacco upwards. The upper mouth of the column faces a mesh conveyor movable substantially transversely to the vertical axis of the column. The conveyor forms an element by which the upward rise of the shredded tobacco is halted and is conveyed towards a member for removing and conveying the tobacco.

    • An apparatus for scanning and sorting tobacco leaves includes a conveyor to convey a flow of tobacco leaves. The flow of tobacco leaves includes acceptable and unacceptable leaves and undesirable particles. An air flow source lifts and accelerates the flow of leaves and particles to a speed at which the leaves and particles are separated. A duct contains the lifted and accelerated flow. A scanning device scans the flow in the duct and generates a signal upon detection of an unacceptable leaf and/or undesirable particle. A rejection device responds to the signal and forces the unacceptable leaf and/or undesirable particle from the duct. A method of scanning and sorting tobacco leaves includes conveying a flow of tobacco leaves including acceptable and unacceptable leaves and undesirable particles, lifting and accelerating the flow to a speed at which the leaves and particles are separated, scanning the separated leaves and particles to detect unacceptable leaves and undesirable particles, and forcing unacceptable leaves and/or undesirable particles from the accelerated flow of leaves. The flow may be accelerated to a speed of between 4,000-6,000 ft/min. The scanning device may be an optical or laser scanning device that scans the flow between 2,000-12,000 times per second.

    • The invention provides an elevator for separating and distributing a plurality of whole freshly harvested tobacco leaves including clumps of agglomerated tobacco leaves. The elevator has an inclined frame longitudinally extending between a lower end and an upper end, an endless conveyor, and a declumper. The frame carries deck portions extending substantially between the lower end and the upper end. The conveyor is adapted to travel over the deck portions in an upward direction and under the deck portions in a downward direction. The conveyor is also adapted to carry the tobacco leaves to the upper end and discharge the tobacco leaves from the upper end. Also, the elevator includes a declumper adapted to buffet the clumps of tobacco leaves to separate the whole tobacco leaves in the clumps from each other.

    • There is provided an apparatus which can simplify, expedite and enhance the segregation of undesirable particles from desirable particles in a multiple-layer flow wherein the desirable and undesirable particles are randomly intermixed with each other. This is accomplished by a stepwise reduction of the thickness of the flow to thus locate all or nearly all undesirable particles at or close to the exposed sides of the resulting relatively thin flow so that the undesirable particles can be readily detected and segregated from the thin flow. The stepwise reduction of thickness of the original flow is effected by a cascade of successive accelerating conveyors including a first conveyor which receives successive increments of the original flow from a vibratory trough, and a faster second conveyor which receives successive increments of the accelerated flow from the first conveyor and cooperates with an overhead conveyor to define a channel for advancement of the repeatedly accelerated original flow into the range of instrumentalities for detection and segregation of undesirable particles.
