    • To permit use of shaft position transducers which provide needle pulses at predetermined angular positions of the crankshaft of an engine, such as Wiegand-type, and still enable generation of a counted dwell time even under transient conditions, or under low-speed conditions, the output from the Wiegand transducer is connected to a logic circuit which, under normal operating conditions, by use of a counter counts a predetermined time interval after opening of a switch in series with the ignition coil to determine the dwell period or initiation of current flow for a subsequent ignition event by resetting the counter with a reverse polarity subsequent pulse, thereby passing, upon reset, a predetermined count state which, similar to the normal counting of the count state, initiates closing of the switch. Thus, even though the normal counting time has not yet been reached, the reset operation of the counter will trigger closing of the switch and hence sufficient current flow through the ignition coil to store the appropriate electromagnetic energy therein for a reliable spark at the spark plug.

    • To reduce waste and scrap of automotive electronic computer-type control apparatus constructed in hybrid technology on a substrate, due to malfunction, incorrect programming or desired change in data stored in the memory chip of a read-only memory (ROM) also applied in hybrid technology to the substrate, the substrate has a socket for a standard plug-insertable ROM or programmable ROM hard-wired connected thereto, the memory chip being enabled by application of a voltage applied to a circuit having a severable bridge (12) so that, upon severance of the bridge, the logic voltage applied to the chip will be of the "disable" value, permitting insertion of a standard ROM or PROM (16) into the additional socket (9) for supply of replacement data, the additional socket being hard-wired to a terminal (15) having an "enable" reference potential thereon. Preferably, isolating or decoupling resistors (3) are included in the address lines between the microprocessor (1) and the memory chip (5) to decouple the memory chip address input from the address inputs (8) of the additional socket and hence the additional memory (16 ).

    • To eliminate the effects of disturbances, noise and interference in the signal derived from a speed-dependent signal generator coupled to the engine on the threshold response level of a threshold switch which, upon sensing a leading flank of the signal, causes a controlled transistor switch to turn ON to pass current through an ignition coil and, upon sensing the trailing flank of the signal, turns the switch OFF to induce an ignition pulse, a supervisory circuit is connected to the threshold switch which provides a bias voltage thereto so that the threshold switch will accurately and reliably respond to the trailing flank of the signal from the signal generator even in the presence of noise and interference voltages at a predetermined angular position of the crankshaft of the engine--absent a shift in the relative angular position of the signal from the signal generator and the crankshaft of the engine--to prevent failure of generation of an ignition pulse, or untimely, uncontrolled generation thereof. The supervisory circuit may include a control charge capacitor providing a bias voltage or, for example, a Schmitt trigger set to respond at different threshold levels of the threshold switch and, upon such response, to provide a bias voltage thereto, thus causing the threshold switch to respond upon response of the Schmitt trigger even in the presence of signal disturbances.
