    • A weather strip for a motor vehicle, which is capable of meeting the need for the provision of a lightweight motor vehicle, and exhibiting a great holding force against a flange of a vehicle body. The weather strip includes a trim portion having a generally U-shaped cross-section and a tubular seal portion. The trim portion includes an outer side wall, a bottom wall and an inner side wall, flange holding lips extend in an interior of the trim portion, and the tubular seal portion is formed near a center of an exterior surface of the bottom wall via a neck portion. An exterior surface of a corner portion between the bottom wall and the outer side wall, and an exterior surface of a corner portion between the bottom wall and the inner side wall are respectively formed to have an angle of 90° through 100°, angular parts of both the corner portions are formed with a radius of curvature of 0.2 mm through 2.0 mm, and the outer side wall, the bottom wall and the inner side wall respectively exhibit a JIS hardness of 75 through 100, and are respectively formed of a hard material of rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer with an apparent specific gravity of not less than 0.8.

    • A core metal insert is provided for reinforcing a weatherseal. The core metal insert has a generally U-channel shaped cross-section and has first and second tines extending from a longitudinally extending backbone strip. The tines are bent to provide the U-channel shaped cross-section. The backbone strip is preferably double-coined to provide first and second grooves, one along each face of the backbone strip. Double coining results in greater length extension of the core metal insert, and also provides for more reliable bending of the tines which are less prone to snap off due to bending stress. Preferably, the backbone strip is provided with a plurality of score marks on both of its opposing faces to facilitate reliable and consistent severance of the backbone strip along the score marks to provide discrete structural staples in the weatherseal.

    • A sealing, trimming or finishing strip has a gripping part (2) made of extruded elastomeric material and advantageously incorporating an embedded reinforcement or carrier (10). In use, the gripping part (2) embraces a flange (22) such as framing a closable opening in a motor vehicle body, to support a soft sealing part (4) which is compressed by the closing door for the opening, thus forming a seal. On at least one inside side wall of the channel of the gripping part (2), one or more gripping elements (14) are integrally mounted. Each such gripping element comprises a thin Web-like support (18) with an enlarged end or foot (16). Each foot presents a relatively large surface area which makes frictional area contact with the mount to hold the gripping part (2) in position. Each foot (16) has foot portions (16B, 16C) lying on opposite sides of a plane through the foot and through the support (18). Any nullpull-off forcenull tending to remove the strip from the flange (22) will tend to cause each foot (16) to pivot in a clockwise direction (as viewed in the Figure) on the support (18). One foot portion (16C) will tend to move away from frictional contact with the flange (22). The other foot portion (16B) will be forced into tighter frictional contact with the flange (22) and will thus provide high resistance to pull-off forces.
