    • A portable, hand-held tool for rolling a flange on metal sheet comprises a pair of handles pivoted together, the handles bearing a pair of parallel rollers which are moved together on approach of the handles and are drivable in rotation, the rollers having opposed portions of greater and lesser diameter so that on clamping of a metal sheet edge between the rollers and rotation of the rollers a flange is formed in the sheet edge. The handles may carry a device for setting the separation of the rollers at a desired value.

    • Disclosed is an apparatus for lubricating and beading the edge or rim of a cup having a seamed annular sidewall and a polygonal base. A 360.degree. spray means sprays the inside top margin of the cup wall with water to lubricate and a spinning head having a plurality of radially moveable forming members for contact with the rim subsequently produces the bead. The lubricator has a deflector which moves by means of an air cylinder axially into contact with the top annular wall end to close the end and to direct and combine a water mist created by a 360.degree. spray set up which atomizes the water to a mist by means pressurized air. For the bead forming operation, a base plate together with relatively moveable socket forming wall members provides a seat for the cup on a cam operated elevator device which moves the cup upwardly. The socket is complementary to the polygonal base to prevent rotation of the seated and supported cup relative to the socket. The socket walls retract into a common horizontal plane with the base plate to permit rotationally driven star wheels to first restrain the cups at the lubricating station and then to guide and confine cups onto the base plate in register with the bead forming means and off of the base plate away from the bead forming means. An air stream is directed into the cup to produce a positive pressure which inhibits dust from entering the cup during the bead forming operation.

    • A continuous rotary machine for roll flanging the ends of cylindrical container bodies transports the container bodies in a star wheel while applying a roll flanging tool head to the end portion of the container body in two stages. In the first stage, the tool head forms a small flange that acts as a stress ring to maintain the cylindrical body in circular configuration at the open end, and the stress ring is ironed. In the second stage, the tool head advances by a greater distance to form a larger portion of the flange, and this flange is ironed. Both ends of a cylindrical container body may be simultaneously flanged by this method, in which case the opposite flanging heads rotate in opposite directions at substantially the same speed. The rotary apparatus provides a spindle/ram assembly on a turret for supporting and moving the flanging heads. A cam operates the axially movable ram portion and is located radially outside the ram for greater accuracy in the cam profile. The turret is accurately maintained on a main shaft of the machine by a two rib supporting structure to assure radial alignment and by a locking key with expandable body in a keyway to assure axial alignment.

    • Upon roll-forming an end plate of hemispherical and other cup-like or dish-like configurations, a raw material disc is placed between outer die means consisting of a top outer forming die that can be vertically moved by a drive source and can be freely rotated and at least a pair of left and right outer forming rolls adapted to move along predetermined moving paths and inner die means consisting of a top inner forming die held at a predetermined position that can be driven in rotation by a drive source, and a middle inner forming roll a bottom inner roll both of which are freely rotatable, the outer die means is depressed against the inner die means, and said pair of outer forming rolls are moved along said moving paths so as to press said raw material disc against the middle inner forming roll and the bottom inner forming roll, respectively, one of said outer forming rolls being moved within an effective forming range of the middle inner forming roll, while the other being moved within an effective forming range of the bottom inner forming roll. The effective forming ranges of the middle and bottom inner forming rolls, respectively, are partly overlapped with each other. In an apparatus for effecting the above-described roll-forming operation, an effective forming angle of the bottom inner forming roll is chosen larger than an effective forming angle of the middle inner forming roll.

    • A method and apparatus for making a continuous joint between the longitudinal marginal edges of co-planar sheets wherein the sheets are advanced into the apparatus in co-planar relation with their adjacent margins overlapped. At a first station, both margins are bent down to provide a space between the sheets. At the next station, one margin is bent back so that at its edge a down-turned lip engages the down-turned margin of the other sheet. At a following station, the latter margin is wrapped about the lip to form an interlocked seam, and at a final station, the seam is flattened against the first margin. The apparatus includes pressing rollers above and below the plane of the sheets, the upper and lower rolls being coupled together at the first station in the space formed between the sheets.
