    • A new method of manufacturing a railroad car tank head having the steps of providing a circular blank of steel plate material, cold-forming the circular blank to form an intermediate ellipsoidal dish, cold-forming a peripheral flange region of the intermediate ellipsoidal dish to form a flanged ellipsoidal dish, and heat treating the flanged ellipsoidal dish. The heat treatment may be either a thermal stress relieving heat treatment or a normalizing heat treatment. The two cold-forming steps may be carried out at room temperature. The present invention provides a method of making a railroad car tank head that is more efficient than prior methods, avoids the challenges of hot-forming and single-stage cold-forming, is easily adaptable to different tank head diameters using the same forming equipment, and yields a railroad car tank head that meets safety standards.

    • The invention relates to a process for forming a pipe portion, in which process a base having an opening and having an inwardly projecting collar is formed. It is provided that the pipe portion is made to rotate, that the pipe portion is drawn in by means of a forming roller, with the base being formed by the drawing-in process, that an inwardly projecting material thickening is formed integrally in the base and that an opening is made in the base in the region of the inwardly projecting material thickening, wherein the inwardly projecting collar is formed by at least part of the inwardly projecting material thickening. Furthermore, the invention relates to an apparatus for forming a workpiece.

    • A metal spinning machine includes a mandrel kept in rotation, a roller tool with which a plate blank workpiece is pressed against the mandrel to form the workpiece, linear motors that generate thrust force in proportion to driving electrical current and drive the roller tool, an operating lever that gives an operator command to the linear motor and a control unit that includes a memory. Manual operation of the roller tool with the operating lever by an operator receiving a teaching of the operator command forms the workpiece in a prescribed shape. The memory of the control unit stores the operator command that is then given to the linear motor to enable a same shape to be subsequently formed relative to plate blank workpieces repeatedly.
