    • A safety device on an aft seal system equipped with at least two gaskets for a ship's propeller shaft, which propeller shaft is sealed with respect to the outside water and with respect to a lubricant chamber, and on which a ring-shaped chamber is reserved between each two gaskets, to which chamber are connected a feed line for compressed air and a discharge channel which can be emptied by means of a solenoid valve which opens and closes periodically. The pressure in the ring-shaped chamber is kept always slightly lower than the respective outside water pressure and the lubricant pressure by means of a pressure regulation mechanism. In the feed line to the ring-shaped chamber, downstream of the pressure regulation mechanism there is a solenoid valve, and downstream of that there is an airtight container with a float switch, whereby when the container is full of fluid due to a clogging of the discharge channel, the solenoid valve closes and thereby protects the pressure regulation mechanism and the other units against flooding.

    • A cooling water intake (1) is constructed as an integral body from a composite material, having a duct (2) running from a first opening (3), adapted to face toward the sea, and to a second opening (4), where the cooling water intake may be connected to the cooling water system of a motor. The duct (2) is curved inward and toward the stern, and the duct cross section is flattened near the first opening, which faces to the sea. Toward the second opening (4) the cross section of the duct progresses into a conventional circular cross section. The invention also relates to a method for fabricating a cooling water intake body.

    • An arrangement is provided for the lubricating, cooling and exhaust systems of a four-cycle outboard watercraft motor. Coolant is drawn from the body of water within which the watercraft is operated for circulation through the engine cooling system. Subsequently, the coolant is brought into proximity with an exhaust pipe extending downwardly from the engine within an encasing member. After passing downwardly along the exhaust pipe the coolant is finally directed towards an exhaust gas expansion chamber and a cooling water jacket provided around the expansion chamber. In order to prevent any of the cooling water from splashing back up against an oil reservoir, also located within the casing, a cover is provided across the tops of the expansion chamber and its accompanying cooling water jacket. Coolant water or air may fill the voids separating the various components contained within the encasing. The arrangement is particularly effective in preventing the corrosion of the oil reservoir housing due to back-splashed coolant when the watercraft is operated in salt water; cooling the components contained within the encasing; and, minimizing heat transfer from higher temperature operating components to lower temperature operating components.

    • Several embodiments of water cooled outboard motors embodying an exhaust system that includes at least one expansion chamber contained within the drive shaft housing and that is provided with a coolant jacket. A catalyst is positioned in the exhaust system within the expansion chamber for treating the exhaust gases delivered from the engine to the expansion chamber. The coolant from the cooling jacket is delivered back to the body of water in which the watercraft is operating without flowing into the expansion chamber so as to protect the catalyst from water damage. In some embodiments, plural expansion chambers are incorporaed. In these other embodiments, the expansion chambers are arranged so as to preclude the likelihood of water impinging on the catalyst if it enters through an underwater exhaust gas discharge opening and also the arrangement is such that water will not contact the catalyst when the outboard motor is tilted up to an out of the water condition.

    • A marine stern drive unit (1) includes an assemblage of a propeller-carrying drive shaft housing (10), a bell housing (9) and gimbal housing (8). Mating flow-through passages (21, 23) are disposed in the drive shaft housing and bell housing, and a dual control valve system (30, 31) joins the passages at their juncture. The valve system is arranged to be open when the two housings are assembled, but closes automatically when the housings are disassembled to retain lubricant in the separate housing assembles when the latter are separated for servicing. The valve system includes a valve (31) in one of the passages (23) which is constructed to be snapped together and to be held firmly within the passage, but manually and quickly releasable therefrom when desired. The fluid passage (23, 26) in the bell housing communicates to the gimbal housing which has a sealed fitting (60) and a lubricant carrying portion (65) passing through the usual gimbal mounting hole (14) of the boat transom (2). An inboard container (71) connected to the gimbal housing passage (66) permits inspection of the level and condition of the lubricant. The container has a one-way valve (78) therein which prevents outward leakage of lubricant fluid, but which permits sucking back of lubricant into the system during engine cooling.
