    • A transmission for a counter-rotational propeller system of a watercraft outboard drive provides an increased flow area for exhaust discharge behind the transmission within the lower unit. The transmission includes a pair of counter-rotating gears. A front clutch selectively drives an inner propulsion shaft by engaging the front gear. A rear clutch selectively drive an outer propulsion shaft by engaging either of the gears. The front clutch lies forward of the front gear and the rear clutch is interposed between the gears. The clutching mechanism thus entirely lies forward of the rear gear to provide more space for exhaust discharge flow behind the transmission.

    • A transmission system for a counter-rotational propulsion device is easily incorporated into an existing outboard drive of a watercraft to convert the outboard drive from a single propeller drive to a counter-rotational dual propeller system. The transmission system involves a first transmission which selectively couples an inner propulsion shaft with an existing drive shaft of the outboard drive. The inner propulsion shaft in turn drives a rear propeller. A second transmission of the transmission system is provided between the inner propulsion shaft and an outer propulsion shaft. The second transmission reverses the rotational drive direction input by the inner propulsion shaft so as to drive the outer propulsion shaft in an opposite rotational direction. The outer propulsion shaft drives a front propeller which spins in an opposite direction to that of the rear propeller, but asserts a thrust in the same direction as the rear propeller.

    • A twin outboard drive and more particularly to an improved transmission and shifting arrangement for such drives. The drives include forward, neutral and reverse transmissions of the bevel gear type and which provide counter-rotation of the respective associated propellers. One of the transmissions is shifted in one direction to shift from neutral to forward while the other transmission is shifted in the opposite direction to shift from neutral to forward. A pair of remote control shift levers are provided and a motion transmitting means connects the shift levers with the transmissions so that the transmissions are shifted in opposite directions when the shift levers are moved in the same direction. In some embodiments, this is accomplished by a crank and follower mechanism and in other embodiments, it is accomplished by a cam and follower arrangement.

    • An outboard engine with an automatic clutch to be used for a fishing boat arranged between the crankshaft of the engine and the propeller driving shaft. The automatic clutch comprises a main centrifugal clutch mechanism which is to be engaged at a revolutional torque close to the rated revolution of the engine and an auxiliary centrifugal clutch mechanism which transmits the torque between the shafts with a frictional slip at a revolutional torque which is produced at a rate lower than the above mentioned one. For operating at a higher speed, the propeller is driven by the transmitted revolutional torque through the said main centrifugal clutch mechanism while for sailing at a slower speed or at trolling, it is driven by the torque which is reduced in transmission by the slip effect in the auxiliary centrifugal clutch mechanism.
