    • An idle pattern output-control circuit used in a point-to-multipoint communication based Gigabit Ethernet-passive optical network (GE-PON) is provided to prevent data loss caused by an idle pattern in a Gigabit-Ethernet controller. In a GE-PON having an optical-line terminal (OLT), a plurality of optical-network units (ONUs) connected to each other via an optical-distribution network (ODN), a media-access controller (MAC), and a physical-coding sublayer (PCS), in which the PCS transmits idle-pattern data to a serializer/deserializer (SERDES) when there is no data to be transmitted to the OLT, an idle-pattern output-control circuit comprising a data converter for converting an idle-pattern data generated from the PCS into a low-level optical signal for subsequent transmission to the OLT, and a switching circuit for selecting data generated from the PCS for subsequent transmission to the SERDES when there is data to be transmitted and for selecting data converted by the data converter for subsequent transmission to the SERDES when there is no data to be transmitted.

    • An apparatus and a method of transmitting a normal packet from a transmitting node in a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) based network system are included. Using the apparatus and method in accordance with the present invention, the WDM based network system is able to avoid any collisions between the packets that are already loaded into the mini slots and the packets that are about to be loaded into the mini slots. Therefore, the defects of the synchronous packet transmitting/receiving method are eliminated. The packet-receiving channel of the packet-receiving node can be set to a fixed wavelength; consequently, the problems of the related art techniques are solved. In conclusion, the efficiency of the whole network system is greatly enhanced.

    • PURPOSE: A circuit for controlling an idle pattern output in a GE-PON(Gigabit Ethernet-Passive Optical Network) is provided to use a commercial gigabit Ethernet controller and prevent data loss by an idle pattern. CONSTITUTION: A data converting unit(412) converts idle pattern data into data to be transmitted as an optical signal with a low level to an OLT(Optical Line Terminal). If the data to be transmitted exist, a switching unit(410) selects data outputted from a PCS(Physical Coding Sublayer)(404), and outputs the selected data to an SERDES(Serializer /Deserializer)(408). If the data to be transmitted do not exist, the switching unit(410) selects the data converted in the data converting unit(412), and outputs the selected data to the SERDES(408).

    • PURPOSE: A self-healing annular optical communication network of WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is provided to effectively operate a network by reducing the number of optical fiber links to half by using a circulator. CONSTITUTION: Each node of an annular optical communication network(6) includes an optical branch couplers(310a,340a) having a demultiplexer and a multiplexer each with 1xN capacity. A pair of switching units(210a,280a) are connected with an optical fiber line for protectively switching. Each node also includes a pair of circulators(410a,480a) connected between the optical branch couplers(310a,340a) and the pair switching units(210a,280a). Two ports of the circulators(410a,480a) are connected to the optical switching units(210a,280a) and one port thereof is connected to the optical branch couplers(310a,340a). In this case, a signal inputted to the first port is outputted to the second port, and a signal inputted to the second port is outputted to the third port. The optical switching units(210a,280a) switch an optical signal by discriminating a case where an optical fiber link is normal with respect to two output terminals respectively connected to the two ports of the circulators(410a,480a) and a case where the optical fiber link has an error.

    • An optical cross-connect node architecture interfaces plural optical fiber input and output links, each link containing plural wavelength channels. In one embodiment, the input links are connected to an optical coupler. Pairs of tunable optical filters and optical wavelength converters are each connected to an output port of the optical coupler and perform wavelength channel routing and switching in the wavelength domain, i.e., without the need for any optical space switch. In another embodiment, an additional input wavelength converter is connected to each input fiber link to convert the plural wavelength channels on each link to different, noninterferring wavelengths. This prevents wavelength contention in the optical coupler to which the input wavelength converters are connected. New fiber links may be added in modular fashion without significant impact on the pre-existing optical cross-connect structure. Similarly, new wavelength channels may also be multiplexed onto existing fibers to provide wavelength modularity without having to reconfigure the node.

A plurality of mini-slots(4) are flowed to the respective channels(40) in order to convey the packet. The nodes(50) can reserve fixed reception channels, for example, a node 0(51) can reserve a channel(3) as a fixed reception channel and a node 1(52) can reserve a channel(1) as a fixed reception channel and a node(53) can reserve a channel(2) as a fixed reception channel. At the respective nodes(50), a wave tunable transmitter(61), a wave tunable receiver(63), a wave fixed receiver(62), a queue(65), and a priority queue(64) are arranged uniformly.
