    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fuel cell in which retention of water in the oxidizer electrode and drying of the fuel electrode are prevented by a humidifying condition over a wide range and which can cope with the change in the composition of the fuel, and in which the electrolyte membrane is hardly broken and is highly reliable. SOLUTION: The fuel cell 1 comprises an electrolyte membrane 102, a fuel electrode 3 that is provided on one face of the electrolyte membrane 102 and has a fuel electrode catalyst layer 5 that is supplied with a fuel and contains a platinum-ruthenium alloy catalyst, and an oxidizer electrode 4 that is provided on the other face of the electrolyte membrane 102 and has an oxidizer electrode catalyst layer 7 that is supplied with air and contains a platinum catalyst. The fuel electrode catalyst layer 5 and the oxidizer electrode catalyst layer 7 are respectively constructed of a plurality of split catalyst sections 51, 71, and a gap exists between each mutually adjoining catalyst sections.
