    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat release rate waveform preparation device and a combustion state diagnostic device for an internal combustion engine that can highly accurately define a combustion state of fuel within a cylinder of the internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: In a diesel engine, inside of a cylinder is divided into a cavity interior region and a cavity exterior region. In each region, with respect to each reaction form of vaporization reaction, low temperature oxidation reaction, thermal decomposition reaction and high temperature oxidation reaction of injected fuel, an ideal heat release rate waveform model comprising an isosceles triangle in which a gradient of a hypotenuse indicates reaction speed, an area indicates reaction amount and the length of a bottom edge indicates a reaction period by using reaction start temperature as a base point is prepared. By smoothening and synthesizing the ideal heat release rate waveform model by filter processing, an ideal heat release rate waveform in each reaction form is prepared. The ideal heat release rate waveform in each reaction form is compared with an actual heat release rate waveform obtained from detected cylinder internal pressure, and when the comparison shows that some reaction form has predetermined amount or more of a difference, the reaction form is diagnosed as having an abnormality.
