    • PURPOSE: To obtain a metal carrier excellent in its durability at low cost by connecting the outer surface of an intermediate body arranged between a honeycomb body and an outer cylinder to the outer cylinder and connecting its inner surface to the honeycomb body at positions shifted in an axial direction respectively and also placing the honeycomb body in diffusion connection. CONSTITUTION: In a metal carrier 1, a honeycomb body 4 formed by winding or piling a flat foil 2 and a wave foil 3 is stored in an outer cylinder 6 through an intermediate body 5. In order to ensure diffusion connection much more, the material of the intermediate body 5 is lessened than Cr amount and/or Al amount of the flat foil 2 and the wave foil 3. The plate thickness of the intermediate body 5 is made thiner than that of the outer cylinder 6 and thicker than those of the flat foil 2 and the wave foil 3 from a strength view point. The durability of the flat foil 2 and the wave foil 3 of the honeycomb body 4 is improved since the honeycomb body 4 can be deformed freely in a radial direction and its heat stress may become small when at least one layer of non-connection layer 7 is installed on a side where they are connected to the intermediate body 5. The intermediate body 5 is connected to the outer cylinder 6 by brazing at A part stretching out of the honeycomb body 4.

    • PURPOSE:To efficiently produce a high quality metallic carrier excellent in durability by applying a joining inhibitor to the prescribed positions of the inside of an outer tube or the prescribed positions of the outside of a honeycomb body, housing the honeycomb body in the outer tube and carrying out brazing so that unjoined parts are formed at the prescribed positions between the honeycomb body and the outer tube. CONSTITUTION:Flat sheets 1a and corrugated sheets 1b each made of a heat resistant metal are alternately laminated or a flat sheet 1a and a corrugated sheet 1b are superposed and wound. The resulting honeycomb body 1 is housed in an outer tube 2 to obtain a metallic carrier. At this time, a joining inhibitor is applied to the prescribed positions of the inside of the outer tube 2 or the prescribed positions of the outside of the honeycomb body 1, the honeycomb body 1 is housed in the outer tube 2 and brazing is carried out with a brazing filler metal 3 so that unjoined parts are formed at the prescribed positions between the honeycomb body 1 and the outer tube 2. The outside of the honeycomb body 1 is prevented from sticking to the inside of the outer tube 2 by a diffusion joining reaction, joining can be carried out only at the prescribed positions and the objective high quality metallic carrier excellent in durability is efficiently produced.
