    • PURPOSE: To charge a battery neither too much nor too little whether the battery is new one or not or the like by combining the detection of sealed reaction with switching voltage setting responding to a detection result so as to conduct specified action. CONSTITUTION: Constant current charge by means of a current I1 is executed at first. When a battery voltage reaches a switching voltage V1 , the constant current charge by means of a weaker current I2 is executed. When the battery voltage reaches a switching voltage V2 , the constant current charge by means of a further weaker current I3 is executed. The charge is terminated for instance after the lapse of a predetermined time. When the capacity of the battery is assumed to be C, the current I1 is about 0.2 to 0.3C, the current I2 is about 0.1C, the I3 is about 0.05C, and a constant current charge current by means of the current I3 continues 5 hours for instance. The current I3 is desirable to be set to such a value that an oxygen recycle reaction in the battery with an adequate electrolyte amount is conducted sufficiently so as not to exhaust gas outward.

    • PURPOSE:To measure residual capacity of a battery while considering degree of deterioration of the battery. CONSTITUTION:A main battery 2 is mounted on an electric car, and a residual capacity of the main battery 2 which can be charged and discharged is measured. When quantity of discharge is larger than quantity of charge charged by regeneration and influence of polarization of the battery does not exist, a reference residual capacity is detected by discharge characteristic of the battery on the basis of detection current and detection temperature, and an average residual capacity difference averaging a deference between the present residual capacity of the main battery 2 and the reference residual capacity is found. The average residual capacity is subtracted from an initial full charge capacity which is the maximum capacity capable of charging the main battery, every detection of a charge completion signal, a full charge capacity operation part 105 for calculating a full charge capacity and an operation full charge capacity input from the full charge capacity operation part 105 are lessened together with increase of discharge current. The discharge current is lessened together with decrease of battery temperature, furthermore, an integrating value of the discharge current is subtracted, a residual capacity operation part 104 for calculating the present residual capacity of the main battery 2 is provided.

    • PURPOSE:To correctly determine a time when charging of a battery is necessary, by preliminarily setting a current required at an average accelerating time and calculating a voltage of the battery when the set current is discharged from a discharging current from the battery and a voltage of the battery. CONSTITUTION:After a current and a voltage are detected, it is detected whether charging has started from a code of the detected current. Once the charging has started, a process to release charging/polarization is carried out. The flow of the detecting operation is refrained from proceeding until the charging/polarization is released. The detected current is temporarily stored as a change of a capacity. It is detected whether the stored capacity change exceeds a rated capacity. Then, voltage of a battery when the current is discharged which is necessary at an average accelerating time is calculated from a pair of the measured current value and voltage value and stored. Whether a stored count of true battery voltages has reached a regulated value or more is compared, thereby to calculate a true voltage of the battery. The battery voltage of the highest frequency is estimated to be a true value when a predetermined current is discharged. A time when the battery is to be charged, is determined based on the estimated voltage value.
