    • PURPOSE:To prevent the variation of the dimensions of a strip in its width direction and the generation of flaws at the ends of the strip, by preventing the vertical movement, etc. of the strip between vertical rolls by slanting them, in rolling a strip in its width direction by a vertical mill. For preventing them; when the strip 2 moves one-sidedly upward between both rolls 5a, 5b, the extent of the movement is detected by a vertical movement detector 8 of the strip 2, and its result S1 is inputted to a slanting angle operator 9 to operate a slanting angle of the vertical roll. The operated result S2 is inputted to a slant controlling device 10, which drives a vertical roll slanting device 7a (7b) basing on slanting signals S3, S4 to slant the vertical roll, tereby preventing the unstable upward and downward movements of the strip between both of the rolls 5a, 5b.

    • PURPOSE:To reduce the edge drop and crown of a sheet and to improve the accuracy of its width by subjecting a hot strip to high and low rolling reductions in the width directions at the front and rear stage sides of a mill and applying tensions to the strip respectively. CONSTITUTION:A hot strip S1 is subjected to high rolling reduction in its width direction by a vertical rolling stand 2 placed at the front stage side, in a state of making the peripheral speed of a work roll 31 of the 1st stand 11 lower than that of a work roll 32 of the 2nd stand 12 and enhancing the tension of strip S1. In this way, the buckling strength of hot strip S1 is enhanced, and the rolling reduction in its width reduction is increased to 2-3 times a conventional one. Therefore, the sheet crown control is easily performed, and the adjusting amount of final sheet-width is enlarged. Further, the tension of hot strip S2 is increased by making the peripheral speed of a work roll 37 of stand 17 larger than that of a work roll 36 of stand 16, and the strip S2 is properly subjected to rolling reduction in its width direction by a vertical rolling stand 22 at the rear stage side. At that time, the buckling strength of strip S2 is improved, and the width rolling reduction can be performed. Accordingly, the edge drop and crown of a sheet is remarkably reduced, and the accuracy of the width of product is improved.

A surface of the roll 1 is always monitored by a camera 3 from a position separate from the roll 1 during rolling or between rollings, and when a malfunction is discovered on the surface of the roll, the unit 2 is moved to a malfunction position. The position is scanned by the unit 2 to detect surface roughness of the roll 1. A roll surface grade of the roll 1 is altered according to roll surface roughness. Since a flaw grade of a steel plate is altered by a variation in the roll surface grade, the roll 1 is recombined in response to the surface roughening state of the surface of the roll to stabilize quality of a product. The unit 2 is always scanned, and the surface roughness of the roll 11 may be detected.

In this case the vertical roll 4 is inclined by turning the worm wheel 9 which is linked by a key 15 to the outer periphery of the small diameter cylinder chamber 11 by driving a worm 12 by driving the motor in an inclining mechanism 6, in case of the rolling stock having a certain angle for the level.
