    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a variable attenuator having small wavelength dependence of waveguide type optical parts by adjusting the phase difference when the signal light passes a second optical interferometer in such a manner that the sum of the differential value of the intensity of the transmitted light for the wavelength in a first optical interferometer and the differential value of the intensity of the transmitted light for the wavelength in the second optical interferometer is zero. SOLUTION: After the phase difference when the signal light passes a first optical interferometer is adjusted, the phase difference when the signal light passes a second optical interferometer is adjusted in such a manner that the sum of the differential value of the intensity of the transmitted light for the wavelength in the first optical interferometer at the center wavelength of the signal light and the differential value of the intensity of the transmitted light for the wavelength in the second optical interferometer is zero. The variable attenuator consists of two Mach-Zehnder interferometers 100A, 100B composed of phase adjusters 104A, 104B and the like. The adjusting amount of the phase by the phase adjuster 104B is controlled by a controlling circuit 109. The controlling circuit 109 controls the adjusting amount of the phase by the phase adjuster 104 in the form of a quadratic function for the adjusted amount of the phase by the phase adjuster 104A.
