摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide circuit capable of reducing temperature dependence. SOLUTION: In a light waveguide circuit including a plurality of waveguides having different length, a material (10) having a temperature coefficient of a refractive index including a symbol different from that of a temperature coefficient of an effective refractive index of the waveguide (4) is charged in a groove (12) formed by removing an upper clad and a core from the waveguide (4), or a groove (12) formed by removing the upper clad, the core and a lower clad from the waveguide 4. A difference in length of the removed portions between adjacent waveguides is proportional to a difference in length of the waveguides which were not removed and remained.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical processing circuit which has both an add/drop function and a light attenuating function matching with an OADN ring system by composing the optical processing circuit of one circulator, one 1×N multiplexer demultiplexer, and N plane type light guide circuits. SOLUTION: In signal light passing operation, a phase adjusting mechanism SW1 of the optical processing circuit A (plane type light guide circuit) adjusts a phase beforehand and the path of a 2×2 switch is fixed in a through state having the path connected to an output waveguide facing an input waveguide. Then signal light which is multiplexed with N waves by passing through an optical fiber 2 for input and a preamplifier 1 passes through a circulator 3 and propagated to and demultiplexed by the 1×N multiplexer demultiplexer 4, and then the light is made incident on an I/O port I of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, propagated to an output waveguide at a through port, and then returned by a high-reflection mirror 6 arranged behind to return the I/O port I at the through port. This constitution can minimize the circuit size.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen the propagation loss and bending loss and to improve reproducibility at the time of forming an optical waveguide. SOLUTION: This process for production consists of forming the optical waveguide by forming a groove for forming a core part on the front surface of a lower clad layer 2 formed on the main surface of a substrate, then forming a core layer so as to embed the groove on the lower clad layer 2, removing the main surface side of the substrate to a prescribed thickness to allow the core layer to remain only in the groove and to form the core part 3 to make light propagation effect, then forming an upper clad layer 7 on the main surface side of the substrate and embedding the core part 3. After the formation of the core part 3, diffusion preventive grooves 6 along the core part 3 are formed on the surfaces of the lower clad layers 2 on both sides or one side of the core part 3 and are thereafter subjected to a heat treatment. The upper clad layers 7 are then formed to cover the diffusion preventive grooves, by which the optical waveguide is formed.

摘要： PURPOSE:To reduce the size of a laser device and also to produce a stable short pulse by using a rare earth dope/planar light waveguide of a plane structure as a gain medium that is contained in a ring resonator. CONSTITUTION:A rare earth dope/planar light waveguide 11 of a plane structure is used as a gain medium of an optical amplifier 22'. The excited light is made incident on the waveguide 11 via the excitation light sources 32-1 and 32-2, the multiplexers 33-1 and 33-2, and the optical isolators 23-1 and 23-2 respectively. The isolators 23-1 and 23-2 prescribe the traveling directions of optical pulses and also cut off the reflected return beams. The gain of 15dB is obtained at the waveguide 11 by the exciting light of 9800nm, and the gain of about 10dB is obtained by the exciting light of 1480nm respectively. Furthermore the waveguide 11 secures a wide amplification band by using a glass waveguide as a gain medium which is suited to production of an optical short pulse. When Yb is used as the rear earth, the gain efficiency is improved and at the same time the exciting wavelength is increased.

A plurality of single vertical modes in an amplification gain band of the resonator 14 is selected at a frequency spacing of the resonator 15. One of the vertical modes which are selected by the resonator 15 is taken out by the transmission band of the narrow band filter 16 which is narrower than the frequency spacing of the resonator 15, thus oscillating in a single vertical mode.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing array waveguide type diffraction gratings having low loss and high extinction ratio. SOLUTION: In the process for producing the optical waveguide circuits consisting of a core 5, a lower clad 2 and an upper clad 6 enclosing the core 5, the lower clad 2 is formed on a plane 1 and a groove 3 having a rectangular section is formed on the lower clad 2 by a photographic stage and an etching stage. The core layer 4 is formed on the lower clad 2 inclusive of the groove 3. The surface of the core layer 4 is then planarized and further, the core layer 4 is removed by etching, by which the core layer 4 is made to remain only in the groove 3 to form the core 5 having the rectangular section. The upper clad 6 for embedding the core 5 is thereafter formed.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to rapidly change the phase of propagating light. SOLUTION: This optical phase shifter has a structure formed by arranging a metallic thin-film electrode 4 right above the optical waveguide 2 on a conductive silicon substrate 1. An electric field is impressed on the optical waveguide 2 by applying voltage between this silicon substrate 1 and the metallic thin-film electrode 4. The refractive index of the optical waveguide 2 is then changed by an electro-optical effect and the phase of the light propagating in the optical waveguide 2 is changed. The electro-optical effect is utilized, unlike the conventional thermooptical phase shifter and, therefore, the changing of the phase of the propagated light in such extremely short time determined by the resistance between the electrodes and the capacity product thereof is made possible.

In (A), the grating 10 is used for one reflecting mirror and a dielectric multilayer film mirror 11 deposited on an end face of an optical guide is used for the other reflecting mirror. In (B), an optical resonator is constructed, using the gratings 10 for reflecting mirrors on both ends. (C) is a distribution feedback- type optical resonator wherein the grating 10 is formed in the entire resonator.
