    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction stir welding method capable of increasing the welding strength of a lap joint.
      SOLUTION: A welding tool (1) includes a small diameter projected part (2) at the tip of a shoulder (3). The welding tool is press-fitted only to the upper plate (4) of the lap joint while being rotated. By a friction stirring action, an upper plate side welding boundary surface (6) plastically flows, a surface oxidation film on a lapped surface is peeled off, and the boundary surface is activated to provide an excellent welding part. Also, since the welding tool is formed in a shape having the small diameter semispherical projected part (2) at the tip thereof, the thickness (12) of an upper plate welding part is increased, and a lap joint part with high welding strength can be provided.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a conventional problem in which satisfactory welding is difficult due to difference in deformation resistance of metals, in the case where metals of different melting points are welded to each other in the friction stir welding of lap joints.
      SOLUTION: In this method, welding is performed such that a plurality of members are superposed, with members on the front side pressed by a revolving welding tool 6 from above the superposed part, that the vicinity of the surface of the pressed member is stirred through frictional heat, with the temperature of the superposed face raised by the frictional heat, and that the welding is carried out by the diffused reaction of the oppositely facing members with the superposed face held in-between. According to this method, the upper face of the upper plate 1 is pressed by the welding tool 6, with a friction stir layer 5 formed. This pressing makes the joining boundary faces 3 stuck together, thereby causing diffused reaction between the metals of the upper and lower plates 1, 2 through the frictional heat and enabling a reaction layer 4 to be formed. Thus, the upper and lower plates 1, 2 can be metallically welded to each other.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a seal welding method for a small diameter hole, by which the small diameter hole provided on the surface of a metal plate of a small article can be easily welded in a short time and can be surely and completely sealed, and a high quality welding part with the smooth surface after welding can be obtained, and to also provide its automatic welding device. SOLUTION: The seal welding method is composed so as to seal the small diameter hole by inserting a sealing plug 3 to the small diameter hole 4 provided on the surface of a metal base material 2 which is a lid plate or a flat plate of a container 1 for the small article. A circular or polygonal thin wall thickness part 5b, in which the vicinity of the small diameter hole is in a plane shape, is formed on the rear face side of the metal base material. A circular or polygonal overhanging part 3a, whose outer diameter is larger than the inner diameter of the small diameter hole, is formed to the head part of the sealing plug. The seal welding is executed by melting the sealing plug and the thin wall thickness part of the metal base material by an arc heat source from a welding torch after inserting the sealing plug into the small diameter hole.
