    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, conventionally, a valve is housed in a muffler housing and all parts of the value are exposed to the heat of exhaust gas, offensive elements, and pressure pulsation, therefore, some of the parts have to be made of inoxidizable materials having heat resistance, and to provide a muffler having a variable damping characteristic.
      SOLUTION: The muffler having the variable damping characteristic is comprised of a housing 20 equipped with at least one gas pipe 1 terminating at the housing 20, and at least one valve where a closure element 3 closes the end 2 of the pipe 1 in a resting state. The closure element 3 is a disc and seats on a guide rod 4. The guide rod 4 is guided by a guide sleeve 5 and executes lift-up operation. A spring 8 is located in a valve housing 10, and the housing 10 is airtightly connected to the muffler housing 20. A valve element 3 is opened against the force of the spring 8 immediately when the pressure in the gas pipe 1 becomes sufficiently high.
