      SOLUTION: The range determination device is used for an automatic transmission equipped with a planetary gear shifting mechanism which transmits the output torque of a drive source and multiple frictionally engaged elements whose operational state is switched between an engaged state and a disengaged state, whereby shifting is realized by the torque transmission path of a gear shifting mechanism being switched according to the operational state of multiple frictionally engaged elements, and determines an actual shift range based on the operational state. In the device, a T-ECU4 determines the current shift range based on sensing results from an oil pressure sensor and previously stored operating patterns when not shifting.
