    • PURPOSE:To improve comfortableness and stability of driving as well as to enable free adjustment of the height of vehicle to be performed by a method wherein a hydraulic damper is applied in a vehicle and both the gas chamber capacity and an initial load of spring are independently adjustable. CONSTITUTION:An oil chamber and a gas chamber are defined in an outer tube and a cylinder 12 and at the same time a dampening spring 20 is arranged between the outer tube and the cylinder 12. An adjusting piston 19 for supporting one end of the spring 20 is housed in the cylinder 12 to define a closed reaction oil chamber 26 below it. This cylinder houses thus formed main body 10 of the damper, and a piston 32 built up by integrating a large diameter piston 32A and a small diameter piston 32B having different pressure receiving areas with each other. The hydraulic damper is composed of an adjusting cylinder 30, the first and second shut-off valves 34A and 34B.

At this time, the spring constant becomes medium permitting a large damping force to be caused because the diameter of the passage 36b is smaller.

When the pressure in the oil chamber 5B becomes equal to those in the oil chambers 7A and 7B of the strut 4, the sensor 32 detects those equal pressures and produces a signal, which puts the valve 18 into the open state.
