An electric signal is applied to an oscillator 2 of an ultrasonic wave transmitting/receiving device 1 via a connector 4 and a lead wire 2a, and therefore an ultrasonic wave is generated by the oscillator 2. This ultrasonic wave is reflected on a reflecting surface 5a of the plate 5 and transmitted in the horizontal direction. While the ultrasonic wave made incident in the horizontal direction is reflected with sound collection on the surface 5a to reach the oscillator 2 and then converted into an electric signal to be extracted outside the device 1 via the wire 2a.
