    • A printer which allows a hyphen preceding or succeeding a word to be erased or not to be erased when words are erased on a word basis, and also relates to a printer which allows only a hyphen to be erased. Although, up to this time, a printer equipped with a mechanism to automatically erase words on a word basis has been available, there is a problem that even when only one word containing misprinted letters out of two words connected by a hyphen is to be erased, both of said words and the hyphen are erased, resulting in an unnecessary erasing and printing of a correct word to decrease work efficiency. In view of the above, to solve the problem described above, this invention provides a detecting means which detects, upon receipt of a command for erasing a word, whether there is a hyphen or not at a print positions one letter ahead of the leading letter of a word corresponding to a print head or at a print position one letter behind the trailing letter thereof, and provides a control means which causes said hyphen to be erased on a signal from said detecting means or a control means which keeps said hyphen from being erased; or provides a control means which controls the operation of a mechanism for erasing according to a signal from the detecting means.

    • A teleprinter terminal (10) includes a keyboard (70), a thermal printer (62) and communications electronics (44, 56, 58), each of which is operated by means of a self-contained microprocessor (40, 52, 60) which can store and release data, in order to provide a simple and reliable control system for the terminal. The three microprocessors (40, 52, 60) are interconnected by four bit buses (PRINT DATA, TRANSMIT DATA/STATUS) for data transfer operations between the processors which are done in bytes but the four-bit buses forces the bytes to be transferred in two, four-bit exchanges. One four-bit bus (PRINT DATA) is used to connect the communications processor (52) and the keyboard processor (40) with the printer processor (60) for transfer of data to the printer and a second four-bit bus (TRANSMIT DATA/STATUS) is used to connect the keyboard processor and the communications processor for transfer of data to the communications electronics. The communications electronics includes a serial communications interface (44, 58) for data transmission and reception and a parallel interface (56) for data reception only.

    • In a text processing system including a keyboard (8), a printing mechanism (6), a controlling logic device (2) and a storage (10), the hyphen code that is stored in storage (10) in response to depression of a hyphen key on keyboard (8) is conditioned on printing position and on the codes adjacent to the hyphen code in a text string. If a hyphen is keyed after the start of the return zone, is preceded by a graphic representative code and is followed by a keyed carrier return, a distinctive hyphen code representative of a syllable hyphen is recorded. Otherwise, a regular hyphen is recorded unless the hyphen key has been depressed in conjunction with a condition key, in which case a code representative of a required non-breaking hyphen is recorded. As a result of so controlling the recorded hyphen codes at the time of keyboarding, the operator's intentions for hyphenation may be achieved with little departure from normal keyboarding routine.
