Method of continuously casting a thin strip (43) or a thin slab of steel having a thickness of between 1 and 20 mm, by casting metal melt (34) onto a drum surface (7) of a first casting drum (1), forming a casting gap (25) by means of a second casting drum (22) having its drum surface arranged at a distance from the first casting drum (1) corresponding to the thickness (42) of the strip (43) or slab, strand shells (37, 39) forming on the drum surfaces of the first and second casting drums (1, 22) by contact with the metal melt (34) and formation of a sump (38) between the two casting drums (1, 22) and by conveying the strand shells (37, 39) forming thereby on the drum surfaces of the two casting drums by rotation of the first and second casting drums (1, 22), characterised in that the sump (38) is formed at a distance from the site of casting on metal melt (34) onto the drum surface (7) of the first casting drum (1), that a strand shell of predetermined thickness (45) is formed between the sump (38) and the casting on onto the drum surface (7) of the first casting drum (1), and that the casting gap (25), on the periphery of the first casting drum (1) is brought into a position in which the two strand shells (37, 39) formed on the drum surfaces in their maximum thickness (44, 45), in total, correspond to at least the thickness (42) of the cast strip (43) or the cast slab.
