摘要： Sample chamber (3) comprising a cover plate (32) and a housing (30) forming a heat sink, said housing (30) including an immersion end (16) having a first opening (20) for a molten-metal inflow conduit (7) and an opposing end (18), and a first face (40) extending between said immersion end (16) and said opposing end (18), said first face (40) having a depression extending from proximate the immersion end (16) towards the opposing end (18), said depression being in direct flow-communication with the first opening (20) to receive the molten metal from the inflow conduit (7).
The cover plate (32) and the housing (30) are assembled together along a first plane (AF) to form a sample cavity including the depression such that an analysis surface of the solidified-metal sample (S) formed within the sample cavity lies in the first plane (AF). The sample cavity and the first opening (20) are aligned along a common longitudinal-axis (X) and the first opening (20) is spaced apart from the first plane (AF).
The ratio between the thermal diffusivity of the solidified-metal (S) and the thermal diffusivity of the material forming the housing (30) is between 0.1 and 0.5, the housing (30) is configured to be inseparable from the solidified-metal sample (S) and at least a portion of the housing (30) is directly adjacent to the solidified-metal sample (S) and lies in the first plane (AF).

摘要： A drop-in probe includes a measurement head having an immersion end and an opposing second end having an end face. The measurement head is formed of first and second body halves configured to mate together along a parting line. A sample chamber, arranged within the measurement head, is thermally isolated from a cooling mass thereof and includes a metal wall having a thickness of 2.5 mm or less. An inlet tube has an inlet opening to the sample chamber. The inlet opening has a diameter Dinlet and is spaced apart from the end face of the measurement head at a distance of at least Dinlet/2. When the sample chamber is filled with a sample of the molten metal, a ratio of a mass of the metal sample to a mass of the metal wall of the sample chamber is greater than 2.6 and less than 6.

摘要： A drop-in probe for determining phase changes by thermal analysis of a sample of a molten metal includes a measurement head having a first end which is an immersion end and an opposing second end having an end face. A sample chamber is arranged within the measurement head. An opening, which is free of any restrictions and which is in communication with the sample chamber, is formed in the end face of the second end of the measurement head. The sample chamber includes a first thermocouple having a first thermocouple junction enclosed within a wall which has a uniform internal geometry. A ratio D/H of an internal diameter D of the sample chamber to a length H extending between the opening and the first thermocouple junction is between 0.1 and 1.2.

摘要： A drop-in immersion probe for inserting into molten metal comprises a generally cylindrical measurement head having an axis and a first axial end which is inwardly tapered toward the axis. The measurement head is made of a combination of materials having a combined density greater than the density of the molten metal. A sensor element extends outwardly from the first axial end of the measurement head proximate the axis and a slag cap covers the first end of the measurement head and the sensor element. A leadwire extends outwardly from the measurement head and has one end electrically connected to the sensor element. A portion of the leadwire extending outwardly from the measurement head is preferably covered by a protective sleeve of heat resistant material. In a preferred embodiment, the slag cap and the measurement head are covered with an ablative material to prevent the adherence of slag. Also in a preferred embodiment, the leadwire and protective sleeve are spirally wound upon a leadwire support tube contacting the second axial end of the measurement head.
