A shaper (18) is first placed in contact with a face gear (112), to thereby shape a surface of the face gear (112) into a plurality of face gear teeth (114). The shaper (18) is then removed, and the face gear (112) is case hardened. The grinding worm (54) is disposed in a normal orientation to the case-hardened face gear (112) and includes a spiral tooth (61) extending along a perimeter of the grinding worm (54). The spiral tooth (61) of the grinding worm (54) is adapted to contact and precision grind the case-hardened gear (112). A dressing tool (56) includes a protrusion (58) for contacting the spiral tooth (61) of the grinding worm (54), as the spiral tooth (61) contacts and precision grinds the case-hardened face gear (112). The dressing tool (56) thus maintains the shape of the grinding worm (54) to within a desired tolerance range.

摘要： A face-gear forging die is constructed from a blank, and is cut to specification using a wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) process. The wire electrical discharge machining process is computer controlled, according to pre-specified instructions. The wire electric discharge machining process can also be used to cut the face gear tooth (47) directly, to thereby circumvent the forging procedure. The complex, curved surfaces of the face gear teeth (47) are mathematically approximated with a ruled surface, and the mathematical approximation is input to the wire electric discharge machining apparatus for subsequent execution and forming of the die.

At least one input pinion (43) and at least one idler pinion (81) contact both face gears. 摘要： A locking mechanism for locking an orientation of a weapon is disclosed. The locking mechanism includes a first movable arm (46) adapted to contact and apply pressure onto a control surface (30) associated with the weapon (12), and a second movable arm (48) adapted to contact and apply pressure onto the control surface (42) associated with the weapon (12). The locking mechanism further includes a valve (54) for applying and removing resistance to the first movable arm (46) and the second movable arm (48), to thereby control a resistance to movement of the first movable arm (46) and the second movable arm (48). The valve (54) is adapted to remove resistance from the first movable arm (46) and the second movable arm (48) in order to allow the weapon (12) to be moved freely into a desired orientation. After the weapon (12) is moved into the desired orientation, the valve (54) may be moved again to increase resistance to thereby allow for fine adjustments in the orientation of the weapon (12). Finally, the valve (54) may be completely closed to lock the orientation of the weapon (12). The first movable arm (46) and the second movable arm (48) each have separate hydraulic cylinders and pistons.
