    • A marine reduction gearbox, or transmission, is provided with variably engageable clutches (26, 30) connected in torque transmitting relation between a prime mover (12) and a propeller shaft (14). These variably engageable clutches (26, 30) permit the prime mover (12) to be connected to the propeller shaft (14) in partial torque transmitting association. One advantage of this type of apparatus is that the prime mover (12) can be partially loaded during crash reversal procedures while the propeller shaft (14) is still and inhibited from rotating by the action of a brake (37). This preloading of the prime mover (12) while at idle speed increases the power output of the prime mover (12) and prepares it for an eventual connection to a rotatable propeller shaft (14) with the brake (37) disengaged or partially disengaged. This procedure prevents the stalling of the prime mover (12), especially when the prime mover (12) is a high break mean effective pressure engine. A second advantage of the use of a variably engageable clutch is that a marine vessel can be operated at speeds lower than that which would result from direct connection between a prime mover (12) operating at idle speed and a propeller shaft (14).

      The present invention includes a reverse reduction transmission 11 for converting a power from a main engine 10 to an output for causing a watercraft to make forward travel, neutral, or reverse travel, so as to control navigation of the watercraft 1. The watercraft steering system includes a plurality of obstacle detectors 45, which detect an obstacle 70. The obstacle detectors 45 are disposed at a hull 2 of the watercraft 1. Upon detecting an obstacle 70 located approximately in the travel direction of the watercraft 1, the system reverses the rotational output of the reverse reduction transmission 11 and changes the travel speed of the watercraft 1 to a travel speed according to the distance between the hull 2 and the obstacle 70 and according to the travel speed of the watercraft 1, so as to stop the hull 2.

The operating part (46 (45)) is provided with a self-return member (56 (86)) which forcibly rotates the operating part (46 (45)) when any electric power is not supplied to the electric actuator (50 (80)), and returns the forward and reverse travel switching mechanism (40) to the neutral state.
