    • A marine reduction gearbox, or transmission, is provided with variably engageable clutches (26, 30) connected in torque transmitting relation between a prime mover (12) and a propeller shaft (14). These variably engageable clutches (26, 30) permit the prime mover (12) to be connected to the propeller shaft (14) in partial torque transmitting association. One advantage of this type of apparatus is that the prime mover (12) can be partially loaded during crash reversal procedures while the propeller shaft (14) is still and inhibited from rotating by the action of a brake (37). This preloading of the prime mover (12) while at idle speed increases the power output of the prime mover (12) and prepares it for an eventual connection to a rotatable propeller shaft (14) with the brake (37) disengaged or partially disengaged. This procedure prevents the stalling of the prime mover (12), especially when the prime mover (12) is a high break mean effective pressure engine. A second advantage of the use of a variably engageable clutch is that a marine vessel can be operated at speeds lower than that which would result from direct connection between a prime mover (12) operating at idle speed and a propeller shaft (14).

    • The invention relates to a stem-drive unit for boats with an inclined hull.
      In the drive according to the invention, the mechanical units are separated from the supporting structure, which is made in the form of a structure (10) supporting parts (7, 5) which transmit motion from an inverter (6), located at the output of engine (3), to the propeller, consisting a plate (11) designed to be attached to the keel of the boat, to which are connected a pair of V-shaped arms with a first sleeve (15) fitted at the lower ends thereof, and a third arm with a second sleeve (16) fitted at the lower end thereof, which said sleeves (15, 16) house a box (17) to which lead propeller shaft (5) and a shaft (7) orthogonal to it, leading from a motion inverter, seal means being fitted between said box (17) and said shafts (5, 7).
      The result is a light drive which is easily adaptable at low cost to the various keel configurations used by different boat builders.

    • A boat propulsion system (100) interposed between a prime mover (77) and a propeller shaft (13), which comprises a hydro-mechanical transmission (20) including a planetary gear transmission part (50) and a hydrostatic transmission part (40). The planetary gear transmission part (50) is drivingly interposed between the hydrostatic transmission part (40) and the propeller shaft so that the input portion of the hydrostatic transmission part is drivingly connected to the first element (51), and the output portion of the hydrostatic transmission part to the third element (57). A reverser (30) is interposed between the second element (56) of the planetary gear transmission part and the propeller shaft so as to select one of opposite output rotary directions of the propeller shaft.
