    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk comprising a plurality of tracks. The head is positioned over a track minus a first delta and a first frequency pattern is written at a first frequency. The head is positioned over the track plus a second delta and a second frequency pattern is written at a second frequency different from the first frequency. After writing the first frequency pattern and second frequency pattern, a third frequency pattern is written substantially centered on the track at a third frequency. After writing the third frequency pattern, the head is scanned across the track while reading the disk to generate a read signal. A first frequency component is extracted from the read signal representing the first frequency, and a second frequency component is extracted from the read signal representing the second frequency.

    • A perpendicular magnetic recording writer for use in a data storage device, the recording transducer has a magnetic writer pole, a pole tip facing an air bearing surface (ABS). A trailing side wall nonmagnetic gap layer on the trailing side wall, a first side wall nonmagnetic gap layer deposited on the first side wall, and a second side wall nonmagnetic gap layer deposited on the second side wall. A high magnetic moment seed layer is deposited on the trailing side wall nonmagnetic gap layer, the first side wall nonmagnetic gap layer, and the second side wall nonmagnetic gap layer. In other aspects of the invention shields are provided that have magnetic moments less than the magnetic moment of the seed layers.

    • Systems and methods for providing stacked writer leads for magnetic transducers used in disk drives are provided. One such system for providing stacked writer leads for a magnetic transducer includes a writer coil for the magnetic transducer, a first pad on the magnetic transducer, a second pad on the magnetic transducer, a first circuit trace coupled to the first pad and a first terminal of the writer coil, and a second circuit trace coupled to the second pad and a second terminal of the writer coil, where a preselected length of the first circuit trace and the second circuit trace is configured in a stacked configuration where each of the preselected lengths of the first circuit trace and the second circuit trace is positioned at about the same location in spaced apart planes.

    • In fabricating the magnetic head, a first magnetic shield layer (S1) is fabricated upon a substrate base, followed by a thin first insulation layer (G1). A photoresist mask is fabricated upon the G1 layer and electrical lead recesses are milled through the G1 layer and into the S1 layer. An insulation layer is deposited into the electrical lead recesses, followed by the fabrication of electrical leads within the recesses. The photoresist is removed and a magnetoresistive (MR) sensor is subsequently fabricated on top of the G1 layer, such that portions of the MR sensor are fabricated on top of portions of the electrical leads. Hard bias elements are then fabricated at outboard edges of the MR sensor. A thin second insulation layer (G2) is fabricated on top of the MR sensor and hard bias elements, and a second magnetic shield layer (S2) is fabricated on top of the G2 layer.
