    • This invention relates to a vehicle cruise controller which controls engine output and gear shift position such that a detected vehicle speed is identical to a target vehicle speed. A shift to lower gear is performed when a difference between the target vehicle speed and detected vehicle speed reaches a first predetermined value .alpha..sub.1. A mechanism is provided for estimating a travel resistance of the vehicle, the travel resistance when this difference has reached a second predetermined value .alpha..sub.2 which is less than the first predetermined value .alpha..sub.1, being learnt as a maximum drive torque FB of the engine. A shift to higher gear is made when the estimated travel resistance has become less than this learnt maximum drive torque FB after the shift to lower gear. In this way, gear shift hunting during cruise control when the vehicle is climbing or descending slopes, is suppressed.

    • In order to compensate for the effect of a by-pass passage which by-passes air about the engine throttle valve when a predetermined vacuum prevails downstream thereof, or the delay in air flow within the induction system in response to the demand for engine power, a target torque value is derived based on the engine speed and the accelerator pedal depression amount and this value is used in connection with one or both of the fuel supply and the air flow control. In some embodiments two basic injection pulses are developed and one is selected to suit the instant induction conditions. In other embodiments, selectively delayed target torque values are used to individually modify the throttle valve control and injection fuel supply amount.

    • A machine for cleaning a coupler consisting substantially of a male coupler element and a female coupler element, especially mating surfaces related parts thereof is proposed for avoiding fouling thereof in advance of practical coupling of both the elements. The machine is provided with a ring tube type cleaner unit suspended from a detachable top cover of a cleaning box. The inside space of the ring tube constitutes a liquid chamber supplied with cleaning water from a source and delivers from a number of nozzle openings formed through the inner wall of the ring tube, for delivery of sweep water jets in the center of the ring tube, where the tip and to-be-coupled ends of both the coupler elements are positioned at a small mutual distance. After cleaning jobs, either one of the male and female coupler elements is advanced to mating position for establishing a tight contact with the other one of the coupler elements for avoiding otherwise frequently encountered, disadvantageous fouling.

Whether operations such as a programming (i.e., writing), erasing or reading with respect to the data memory elements will be allowed or inhibited is determined in accordance with the contents of the protecting data memory element. In other words, data security in an arbitrary area of the matrix can be accomplished based on the content of the protecting data memory element.
